NASP ARCHERY

Colton Lang of Gilman won both individual championships in middle school boys competition, Wyllow Freudenthal of Medford won both titles in the elementary girls divisions and several other archers from Medford and Gilman were high finishers during the Medford Archery Club’s annual National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) events Friday and Saturday at Medford Area Middle School.

Lang, an eighth grader, earned a score of 286 out of a possible 300 with his 30 scoring shots in the bullseye shoot to place first out of 108 middle school boys (grades 6-8) and he had the fourth-best score of 303 boys overall. In 15 shots from 10 meters and 15 from 15 meters, he hit the 10-spot on the target 17 times and won the division by two points over Evrette Meidl of Auburndale.

In the 3-D shoot, Lang’s 30 shots (five at six different targets) totaled 279 points, giving him the middle school boys title by three points over Medford’s Dylan Emmerich. The top of the middle school boys standings was owned by local archers. After Emmerich, Medford’s Jax Gosse was third at 273, Gilman’s Wyatt Stephens and Aiden Henke were fourth and fifth with 273s, Pirate Cade Kowalczyk was 10th at 267 and Medford’s Karson Ecklund was 12th with his 267.

Freudenthal, a Holy Rosary fifth grader, hit 13 10-point shots and easily won the girls elementary division (grades 4-5) of the bullseye shoot with a score of 280. Thorp’s Melissa Gates was second at 252. Then, in the 3-D shoot, Freudenthal earned a score of 250 to finish eight points ahead of runner-up McKenzie Wilson of Owen-Withee. Gilman’s Addison Lang finished fifth out of 28 archers in the division with a 218.

There was one more local individual champion. Holy Rosary fifth grader Russell Thums won the boys elementary 3-D shoot with a 254, clipping Owen-Withee’s Jacob Nelson by one point. Gilman’s Kaysen Westaby was sixth at 238.

Gilman’s Alison Krizan was second among 70 high school girls in the 3-D shoot with a 281, four points behind Augusta’s Roella Weiss. Medford’s Mattie Gebert was sixth with a 274 and Gilman’s Ava Webster and Mylie Stephens were ninth and 10th with 272s.

Medford’s Ezra Hillebrand was third out of 56 high school boys with a 283 that put him six points behind champion Noah Bornbach of Stratford. Gilman’s Makii Austin Mallo got a 272 to take ninth and Medford’s Brock Anderson was 11th at 271.

Gebert shot a 286 and nearly won the high school girls division in the bullseye shoot. She was three points behind Stratford’s Alaina Bangart. Gilman’s Shyan Pentimone took sixth at 283 and Krizan and Reece Weir were 18th and 19th with 278s. Hillebrand took fifth out of 123 high school boys with his 285. Anderson was 12th at 281, one point ahead of 16thplace teammate Eric Paul.

The middle school boys division again had a lot of local standouts. Emmerich was fifth out of 108 archers with a 278, one point and one place ahead of teammate Karson Ecklund. Gosse was ninth at 273. Kowalczyk and Wyatt Stephens were 12th and 13th with 270s.

Among 72 elementary boys, Thums was seventh at 250, Westaby was ninth at 245 and Medford’s Flynn Haasl was 11th at 244. Addison Lang was ninth among 41 girls with a 229.

In the middle school 3-D standings, Gilman was third behind Auburndale (1,592) and Stratford (1,569) with 1,536 points. Medford (1,467) was fifth.
