Edgar varsity boys basketball Leyton Schuett is finishing off his final season strong by becoming the ninth Wildcats boys player to score 1,000 career points and leading his team in scoring in its games. He is humble about his career scoring accomplishment.
“It felt pretty good but that’s not really what matters because I just want to win,” he said after leading Edgar with 19 points in Thursday’s 64-34 Senior Night win against Newman Catholic. “The team just wants to win and I also couldn’t have gotten to 1,000 career points without my teammates being very unselfish by getting me the ball.”
Edgar varsity head coach Zach Paul was proud to see that all of his players except one scored at least one point against Newman Catholic. He said Senior Night is always special. Senior bench player Isaac Halama even drained a pair of three pointers from each corner to excite the home crowd.
“We reward the seniors for their hard work and dedication on Senior Night,” Paul said.
Schuett also led No. 7 seed Edgar with 21 points in Tuesday’s 83-79 overtime home win against No. 10 seed Abbotsford in the WIAA Division 4 regional quarterfinal. Edgar, 11-14, advances to play at No. 2 seed Stratford, 22-2, at 7 p.m. this Friday, March 7, in a regional semifinal. Stratford received a bye in Tuesday’s regional quarterfinal. Stratford will host the regional championship at 7 p.m. this Saturday, March 8, if it beats Edgar on Friday.
Tigers win Marawood
Straford’s varsity boys basketball team on Thursday won the outright Marawood South Conference championship with the combination of beating Wisconsin Rapids Assumption, 68-51, on the road and Marathon defeating Auburndale, 68-58, on the road. Junior Riley Spindler led the Tigers with 13 points in their win against the Royals. Junior Drew Woelfel led Marathon with 21 points in its victory against the Eagles.
Both Marathon, 16-8, and Stratford received Division 4 regional quarterfinal byes on Tuesday. No. 4 playoff seed Marathon plays in a home regional semifinal at 7 p.m. this Friday, March 7, against No. 5 seed Phillips. If Marathon wins on Friday then it would either play in the regional championship at 7 p.m. this Saturday, March 8, at No. 1 seed Auburndale if it beats No. 8 seed Colby at home this Friday or at home against Colby if it beats Auburndale.
Athens’ season ends
The Athens varsity boys basketball team beat Prentice, 58-43, on the road in Thursday’s final regular- season game but then lost to the Buccaneers, 78-61, in Tuesday’s road WIAA Division 5 regional quarterfinal. Junior Kam Zarnke led the Bluejays with 20 points in Thursday’s win and junior Riley Schultz-Becker paced the team with 25 points in Tuesday’s playoff loss. Athens ends this season with an 8-17 record while Prentice improves to 14-8.
