Chiefs plunder Raiders for season finale victory

By Ginna Young

To wrap up the regular season, the Cornell girls basketball program met their foes in battle, splitting the matches.

Feb. 20 vs. Clayton conference (L 56-37)

The first test was against Clayton, who came to call on the Chiefs, but although it was a hard-fought game, Clayton took the win, 56-37.

Feb. 21 vs. Bruce conference (W 40-34)

With no time to rest, it was off to Bruce, but Cornell would not be denied and came home with a 40-34 win.

“Both teams really struggled offensively, but we ended up on top in the end,” said coach Stacy Schroeder.

Senior Bralee Schroeder led for the Chiefs with 10 points and 9 rebounds, with sophomore Haylee Ellis recording 9 points and 19 rebounds, while freshman Kaitlyn Helland had 7 points. Senior Alyssa Bowe followed that with 6 points, as did sophomore Annabelle King, and sophomore Anelise Larson chipped in with 2 points.

“It was our last conference game, so a good win to end that,” said S. Schroeder.

Cornell’s season record sits at 7-17 overall, with a 6-10 East Lakeland Conference record. The Chiefs now turn their gaze toward the playoffs and making it past the first round of Regionals.
