Girl wrestlers battle at sectionals

Girls wrestling continues to grow in popularity and this is the first year that Wisconsin high school girls were able to compete in their own regional and sectional. Five Edgar girls, which is the most in The Record-Review’s coverage area, wrestled at sectionals on Friday night at Eau Claire North High School. Only the top two girls in each weight class qualified for this weekend’s state individual tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison. Right now there is only a single division for girls wrestling.

Edgar freshman Adeline Peterson, 2814, finished the highest of any local wrestlers. She took third place at 100 pounds. Edgar sophomore Blaynne Crawford, 39-7, did the next best with a fourthplace finish at 120 pounds.

Wildcats freshman McKenzie Mueller, 4-5, didn’t place in her 126-pound sectionals weight class and neither did senior Alyson Kolano, 17-19, at 152 pounds and freshman Vanessa Czech, 19-15, at 185 pounds.

Stratford had two girls competing at the Eau Claire North sectional. Junior Hailey Fecker, 1-6, didn’t place at 100 pounds and neither did freshman Wynn Schoenherr, 13-11, at 132 pounds.

Marathon junior Lindsay Putnam 2-17, didn’t place in her sectional at the 107pound weight bracket.

Holmen scored the most girls team points with 99 at the Eau Claire North sectional. Black River Falls was second with 69 points followed by Eau Claire North in third with 58 and Marshfield in fourth with 47.5.

The WIAA will award its first ever girls team state champion and girls team runners-up based on how individual girls place from schools at this weekend’s fourth girls individual state wrestling tournament held in conjunction with the 82nd annual boys state individual wrestling tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison. The WIAA will have its first girls wrestling state team tournament in the 2026-27 school year. The boys state wrestling team tournament is held at the UW Fieldhouse in Madison the weekend after the state individual wrestling tournament at the Kohl Center.
