3 NGL wrestlers headed to state
From l-r, Jake Luchterhand, Jackson Meyer, and Hudzon Sebesta-Opelt of Neillsville-Greenwood-Loyal will compete at the individual state wrestling tournament this week.

Neillsville-Greenwood-Loyal (NGL) saw five boys and one girl compete at sectionals this past weekend, with three wrestlers advancing to the state tournament being held this Thursday through Saturday at the Kohl Center in Madison.

The top three finishers in each boys weight class qualify for state. At 144 pounds, Hudzon Sebesta-Opelt took second place in his weight class and punched his ticket to state, where he competed last year and took fifth. At 165, Jakob Luchterhand placed third to become a state qualifier. Jackson Meyeralsotookthirdplace,intheheavyweight class, to advance.

Complete results are as follows, listed by weight class.

GIRLS The WIAA Girls Sectional C took place at Eau Claire North on Friday. The top two finishers in each girls weight class qualify for state. At 114 pounds, Brynn Heck (26-9) placed third to come just short of a trip to state.

Championship Bracket - Heck won by major decision over Izzy Davenport (River Falls) 25-9 (MD 17-7).

Championship Bracket -Amiya Leverance (Nekoosa/Assumption/Port Ed.) 32-11 won by fall over Heck (fall 4:48).

Third-Place Match - Heck won by decision over Adaleah Nest (Stevens Point) 34-17 (decision 13-6).

Second-Place Match - Leverance won by no contest over Heck.

Heck scored 11 team points. NGL placed 22nd out of 30 schools represented at the girls sectional. Winning the tournament was Holmen with 99 points.

BOYS The WIAA Division 2 Sectional C was held at Wisconsin Dells on Saturday.

120 Quarterfinals-CadeBirchman(Fennimore) defeated Rydge Tibbett (NGL) (technical fall 15-0 3:18).

126 Quarterfinals - Blake Endres (Belleville/Mont./New Gl.) defeated Chase Lindner (NGL) (technical fall 18-1 1:58) Consolation Semifinals - Briggs Weigel (Belmont/Platteville) defeated Lindner (technical fall 15-0 2:11) 144 Quarterfinals - Sebesta-Opelt defeated Mason Schulte (River Valley) (technical fall 18-3 4:22).

Semifinals - Sebesta-Opelt defeated Colton Tollefson (Fennimore) (major decision 12-3).

First-Place Match - Haakon Peterson (Dodgeville) defeated Sebesta-Opelt (technical fall 19-4 6:00).

Second-Place Match - Sebesta-Opelt defeated Oliver Harcus (Belmont/Platteville) (technical fall 15-0 2:26).

165 Quarterfinals - Luchterhand defeated Joe Rufenacht (Monroe) (fall 2:24).

Semifinals - Landon Busch (Cuba City/Benton/SW) defeated Luchterhand (decision 10-3).

Consolation Semifinals - Luchterhand defeated David Aguilar (Arcadia) (technical fall 18-2 4:54) Second-Place Match - Busch defeated Luchterhand (no contest).

Third-Place Match - Luchterhand defeated Cayson Helwig (Belleville/Mont./New Gl.) (decision 7-0).

285 Quarterfinals - Meyer defeated Tanner Zastoupil (Evansville) (fall 3:45).

Semifinals - Jack Simmons (Prairie du Chien) defeated Meyer (decision 5-2).

Consolation Semifinals - Meyer defeated Colin Thompson (Portage) (decision 6-0).

Second-Place Match - Dalton Wolf (Fennimore) defeated Meyer (fall 2:24).

Third-Place Match - Meyer defeated Kaden Drake (Darlington/Black Hawk) (fall 5:27).

Team score NGL earned 45.5 points and tied for 10th place among 25 teams at the boys sectional. Winning the tournament was Fennimore with 99 points.
