By Ginna Young The Cadott boys wrestling program was ready and excited for Regional action, Feb. 15, as they were in Edgar, facing off with the best in the area.

As a team, they placed fifth out of 14 teams, but their real success came in individual competition. Although they didn’t see any grapplers claim the champion spot, the Hornets still had five wrestlers qualify to advance to Sectionals.

“I am extremely proud of this young team and very hopeful for our future,” said coach Josh Spaeth. “As you know, athletes have to earn their place at the State tournament.”

Taking third place, was senior Kaleb Lodahl (113 pounds), who won over Glenwood City’s Preston Arvey, as well as junior Steven Williams (126), winning over Logan McVeigh, from Glenwood City, in a 4-3 decision. Freshman Kellen Blanchette (132) also won the third place spot, taking down Austin Krentz (Spring Valley-Elmwood), in a 22-10 major decision.

Sophomore Brock Webster (190) also took third, winning over Stanley-Boyd’s Dredyn Arneson, by fall, in 1:46, while sophomore Owen Fasbender (157) took fourth place, after he won over Brody Westrom, of Stanley-Boyd, by a 17-2 technical foul.

“The only wrestler with Sectional wrestling experience, is two-time State qualifier Kaleb Lodahl,” said Spaeth. “He will be attempting to qualify for his third State tournament.”

Not qualifying to move on, but placing fifth, was freshman Ryker Moskiewicz (106), over Clear Lake’s Mathias Monson, in a 9-3 decision. Freshman Aiydan Sonnentag (175) also was fifth, winning his match against Abe Draxler, of Glenwood City, in a 1:41 fall. Taking sixth place, was freshman Oliver Sudbrink (138), after dropping his match with Marathon’s Levi Krautkramer, in a 13-9 decision.

Not placing, were junior Monte Lodahl (144); sophomore Jon Phelps (150); sophomore Brenton Faber (157); junior Mitchell Reineke (215); and senior Adam Glenz (285).

K. Lodahl, Williams, Blanchette, Webster and Fasbender will now compete at Sectionals in Ladysmith, Feb. 22, looking for a chance to advance to State competition.

“All of our wrestlers have a shot, providing they are willing to put forth their best effort and then some,” said Spaeth.

Cadott senior Kaleb Lodhal (120 pounds) wrestled his way to third place, Feb. 15, at Edgar, in Regional competition.
