Greenwood girls lose second close game to Columbus Catholic

By Harry Toufar On Senior Night, Feb. 11, the Greenwood Indians were hoping to give the seniors a victory at home on their special night. Columbus Catholic would strike first with the game’s first four points before Greenwood tied it on baskets by Faith Kolano and Addison Davidson. Columbus scored on a 3-pointer followed by Greenwood’s Eliska Louckova drilling in a 3-pointer of her own to tie the game with 13:38 left on the clock. The Dons scored twice before Tatym Travis made a basket plus one to close within two points. Two Dons free throws and a basket put the Dons up by six. Davidson made one of two from the free throw line before the Dons hit another 3-pointer. Kolano made one of two free throws and Davidson hit Travis with a beautiful inbound pass for an easy bucket, putting the Indians down 21-16 at the half. The seniors started the second half on a mission. Tysen Lindner, held scoreless in the first half, let her presence be known as she scored seven of Greenwood’s eight points. Louckova made one of two free throws. Momentum seemed to be shifting Greenwood’s way, trimming the Dons’ lead down to four. For the next six minutes, Kolano (4 points) and Travis (5) took over the scoring duties. Travis’ two free throws gave Greenwood their first lead of the evening with under seven minutes to go.

Greenwood held the lead just for a short time, as Dons senior Gracie Wilczek hit a 3-pointer, putting her team up by two with less than five minutes remaining. Greenwood continued to attack the paint, with Lindner scoring five points and Travis scoring four points. A free throw by the Dons’ Lizzy Holz and two by Wilczek gave the Dons a 4-point lead. Davidson was fouled and made both ends of a double bonus with 17 seconds remaining. Greenwood still had a chance. After two missed Dons free throws, the Indians had a chance to win with a 3-pointer, but the shot was off, going out of bounds as time expired.

Lindner led the Indians in scoring, with 15 points, including 5-of-8 from the line. Unofficially, she had 12 rebounds. Travis joined her double figures with 14 points including 4-of-6 from the line. Davidson had seven points, including 3-of-4 from the line. Kolano chipped in with seven points and Louckova finished with four.

Greenwood finishes in third place in the Eastern Cloverbelt Conference with a 9-5 record. They will host Chippewa Falls McDonnell in a crossover game on Feb. 20. In the Division 5 playoffs, the fifth-seeded Indians will host Wausau Newman on Feb. 25. The winner of that contest will play the winner of the Almond-Bancroft/Athens contest on Feb. 28.
