By Ginna Young Battling a snowstorm and the competition, the Cornell-Lake Holcombe-Gilman wrestlers were in action, Feb. 8, at Turtle Lake, for the Lakeland Conference tournament championship.
“Everyone wrestled great,” said coach Zach Person. Proving how great, was freshman Kaitlyn Madlon (152 pounds) who was voted as the Most Valuable Girls Wrestler and with good reason, as she received a bye, then won ober Unity’s Lorelei Haaf, by fall, in 1:13, then faced Delanie Vindish, of Luck-Frederic-Grant-Siren, for the championship. Madlon made Wolfpack history, coming away with the conference crown, by fall, in 3:31.
Freshman Aspen Person (114) placed second for the Wolfpack, receiving a bye, then winning over Unity’s Persayiss Tucker, in 1:39, by fall. She then dropped the championship match to Clear Lake’s Jordyn Perry, in a 12-1 major decision.
For the boys, sophomore Taydyn Angell (215), who received a bye in the first round, before taking down Shell Lake’s Jackson Meltonm by fall, in 1:15. He then faced Jakob Taylor, of Flambeau, winning by a 1:56 fall, for the championship.
Also placing high for the Wolfpack, was senior Lee Zagorski (285), who received a bye, then dropped his match against Turtle Lake’s Cain Casarez, by fall, in 1:52. Zagorski battled back to face Brett Bartlett, of Siren, winning in 3:27, by fall. He then went up against Shell Lake’s Jameson Buckridge, taking the win and third place, in just 56 seconds, by fall.
Placing fourth for the Wolfpack, was senior Preston Fredrickson (150), who battled back in the bracket to face Shell Lake’s Briar Naglosky, in the third place match, dropping it in 3:00, by fall. Sophomore Lucas Halida (132) also was fourth, dropping his match with Liam Hammond, of Shell Lake, by fall, in 2:40.
Junior Saywer Winger (157) did not place. The team will now refocus and look ahead to Regional action.
“Great job on the weekend,” said Z. Person. “Go, Wolfpack.”
Taydyn Angell, Cornell-Lake Holcombe-Gilman sophomore (215 pounds), made short work of his opponent, while at Cadott, Jan. 11.
