Hornets blow by teams to claim conference crown

By Ginna Young The Cadott boys wrestling program just keeps racking up the accolades this year, and this week, topped off the regular season by improving their dual record and by claiming the Cloverbelt Conference title.

Feb. 4 Boyceville Dual (W 51-22) Coming off clinching the dual league title, the Hornets were on the road to Boyceville, to finish off the meet season. It was no contest for the competition, as Cadott took the win, 51-22, ending with an overall dual record of 13-4.

Individually, the Hornets saw many victories on the night, including junior Iszy Sonnentag (113 pounds), winning over Kayla Frett, in just 30 seconds, as well as junior Steven Williams (126), who won over Eli Cole, by fall, in 1:55. Freshman Kellen Blanchette also won over Victor Pattermann, in 2:41, by fall, and sophomore Brock Webster (190) got the win over Cole Retz, by fall, in 45 seconds.

Receiving forfeit wins, were senior Kaleb Lodahl (120), freshman Oliver Sudbrink (138), sophomore Jon Phelps (150) and sophomore Owen Fasbender (157).

“I am proud of the improvements this team is making each week,” said coach Josh Spaeth. “I look forward to seeing our athletes compete in the postseason.”

Feb. 7 Spencer Conference Tournament Avoiding a major snowstorm that was set to hit the next day, Cadott traveled to Spencer for the conference tournament and dominated their opponents.

“The Hornets had an absolutely phenomenal tournament,” said Spaeth. “Every single wrestler stepped up and competed at their highest level, and we completely separated ourselves from the competition.”

The team was not only crowned as conference champions, but also saw many individual champions from the day. Sonnentag again claimed the top spot on the podium, winning the first place match over Mason Anding, of Neillsville-Greenwood-Loyal, by fall, in 3:53. Lodahl also placed first, winning over Drew Ryder, of Bloomer-Colfax, with a 16-3 major decision.

Blanchette also was first, winning over Mason Wolf (Spencer-Columbus-Granton), by fall, in 5:36, as did Sudbrink, winning over Adam Kautzer, of Neillsville-Greenwood- Loyal, in 2:57, by fall. Fasbender also took first over Abbotford-Colby’s Izaac Sundermeyer, by technical foul.

Coming in second, was freshman Ryker Moskiewicz (106), as did Phelps and junior Mitchell Reineke (215), while junior Anthony Glenz (285) took third. Taking fourth place, were Williams and freshman Max Davis (144), while sophomore Brenton Faber (165) and freshman Aiyden Sonnentag (175) were fifth.

Spaeth is very proud of what his team has done this season.

“Their hard work, determination and team spirit were on full display,” said Spaeth. “I can’t wait to see what the post-season has in store for our athletes.”
