By Ginna Young Playing three close games over the week, the Cornell girls basketball program came up with a win on their home court, over a tough conference foe.
Feb. 4 vs. Winter conference (L 67-59) To begin the week, the Chiefs were on the road at Winter and even led by seven at the break, over the Warriors.
“The girls played a great first half,” said coach Stacy Schroeder. “Winter came out in the second aggressively and we fell apart for a while.”
Cornell managed to right the ship, but then foul trouble hit, with three of the players fouling out of the game, leaving just four girls on the court. That gave Winter an advanatage, enough to pull ahead, for a 67-59 victory.
“We’ve only had someone foul out two times so far this year, total, so it was really odd to have three in one game,” said Schroeder.
Senior Bralee Schroeder came up big for the Chiefs, with 26 points and 13 rebounds, while sophomore Haylee Ellis had 13 points, and senior Alyssa Bowe recorded 13 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Annabelle King rounded out the scoring, with 4 points and 5 rebounds.
“Overall, we played a good game offensively and defensively, and we continue to show improvements every week,” said S. Schroeder.
Feb. 7 vs. Prairie Farm conference (W 49-43) The Chiefs then saw Prairie Farm come to town, in another tight game. Cornell got down early by 10 points in the second half, but the game was far from over.
“The girls put on a great display of perseverance and kept chipping away at the lead, when Alyssa made a three, to tie it up, which changed the momentum,” said S. Schroeder. “They got a few points up on us, when Bralee made a shot, with a foul and made the free throw, tying it up again.”
Ellis and Bowe both knocked in a three-pointer late in the period, to pull the Chiefs ahead. Ellis went to the charity stripe and put the nail in the coffin, to give Cornell a 49-43 win.
“We created turnovers on defense, which we were able to convert on,” said S. Schroeder.
Ellis finished the night with 19 points, 11 rebounds and 7 blocks, while Bowe had 15 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. B. Schroeder added 11 points on the night, with 5 steals and 3 blocks, and sophomore Anelise Larson recorded 2 points and 5 rebounds.
King also had 2 points, along with 3 steals, and freshman Kaitlyn Helland chipped in with 2 points.
“All the girls contributed and [it] was one of our best performances,” said S. Schroeder.
Feb. 10 vs. Bruce conference (L 59-51) It was then time to host Bruce, but although it was close on Cornell’s home court, the Raiders pulled off the win, 59-51.
Anelise Larson, Cornell sophomore, tried to guess what direction her Prairie Farm opponent was going to go, in a match-up at home, Feb. 7.
