The Thorp Cardinals did not present too much of a challenge when they played at Spencer last week Tuesday. The Spencer girls cruised to victory after getting out to a 20-point lead in the first half.
The Rockets saw seven players score in the game, with six of them scoring in the first half. As a team, they made 13 of 22 free throws in the first half, shooting for 59%. No shots were made from 3-point land in the first half, however. Autumn Davis scored 18 points in the half. She landed six 2-pointers and six free throws. Hannah Schreiner scored eight, including three 2-pointers and a free throw. Alexa Weber sank three free throws. Montanna Kohls, Alina Jackson, and Emma Nieman all scored two. That left Spencer leading by 20 points, 35-15, at halftime.
In the second half, Spencer relaxed a bit, riding on the lead they had built up. The Rockets only scored 20 points in the second half, the same number Thorp scored. Davis again brought in half of her team’s points, scoring two 3-pointers and two 2-pointers. Kohls shot a three, while Jackson, Schreiner, and Soback had two. Nieman scored one.
Spencer ended the game with the 55-35 win. Overall the Rockets shot for 50% at the line, making 14 of 28 baskets. This was slightly better than Thorp, who went 9-for-20 for 45%.
Spencer point totals were Davis 28, Schreiner 10, Kohls 5, Jackson 4, Nieman 3, Weber 3, and Soback 2. Davis matched her second highest points-per-game total this season. She also scored 28 in the home opener versus Prentice on Nov. 19 and the Jan. 3 home game versus Cadott. Her highest points per game came at Edgar on Dec. 23, in which she scored 36 points and the team took a 66-53 loss.
Greenwood battles Spencer in Thursday night showdown The Greenwood girls had a rough first half against the Spencer Rockets when they played against them at the Spencer Dome on Feb. 6 before eventually claiming a 50-35 victory. Gameplay was especially aggressive in the first half, as the Rockets kept pace with the Indians and ended the half only down by four points (26-22). Greenwood put the pressure on in the second half, cooling down the Rockets’ offensive firepower to secure their win by the end of the night. At far left, Greenwood’s Tatym Travis recovers a loose ball that sent several players scrambling after it. At the immediate left, Montanna Kohls of Spencer fires off a shot beyond the 3-point line to score for Spencer. At below left, Spencer’s Hannah Schreiner attempts to find a teammate to pass to as she is swarmed by the Indian defense.
