NASP ARCHERY - Archery season starts with Badger State, Stanley-Boyd shoots

The Gilman Pirate Archery Club placed fourth while Medford’s Archery Club placed sixth in the high school team standings of the National Archery in the School Program’s Badger State Winter Games competition hosted Friday and Saturday by Wausau West.
Gilman’s team score of 3,211 put the Pirates behind Stratford (3,360), Cadott (3,324) and Columbus (3,222). Marshfield was two points behind Gilman but two points ahead of Medford (3,207) in the tight race for third through sixth place. Portage was seventh at 3,132. Twelve teams had enough archers to be included in the team standings.
Individually, Medford’s Mattie Gebert and Dylan Emmerich earned scores of 289 out of a possible 300 to earn second place in their respective divisions.
Gebert, a senior, ranked second out of 138 high school girls, three points behind Stratford’s Rhyan Millard. Emmerich ranked out of 104 middle school boys (grades 6-8), three points behind champion Lewis Lukes of Stanley-Boyd.
Wyllow Freudenthal, a fifth grader from Holy Rosary school in Medford, shot a 260 to place third out of 54 girls in the elementary division (grades 4-5). Medford’s Karson Ecklund also cracked a top 10, placing sixth among middle school boys with his score of 278.
Among the top archers for Gilman were senior Alison Krizan, who shot a 279 to place fifth in the high school girls division; Makii Austin Mallo, who shot a 283 to place ninth among high school boys, and Colton Lang, who shot a 276 to finish just behind Ecklund in seventh place among middle school boys.
Medford is scheduled to attend the Auburndale shoot this Saturday, while Gilman is headed to Thorp. Gilman hosts its annual shoot on Saturday, Feb. 1.

Stanley-Boyd shoot
Both local clubs started their 2025 seasons Jan. 11 at the first-ever Stanley-Boyd tournament. Gilman placed fourth in the high school team standings with 3,184 points, trailing Cadott (3,345), Straford (3,226) and Marshfield (3,202) while outscoring six other teams.
Medford’s Ezra Hillebrand was the highest-scoring local archer, shooting a 291, one point behind the day’s overall champion Garrett Drexler of Stratford. They finished first and second in the boys high school standings. Gebert was second out of 108 high school girls with her score of 285. She was three points behind Augusta’s Roella Weiss.
Lang (280) and Emmerich (279) were fourth and fifth in the middle school boys division, not far behind winner Austin Bohman of Stratford (283).
Freudenthal was the elementary girls champion in a field of 19 with her score of 277. Gilman’s Addison Lang was third at 237. Medford’s Cooper Erl was second among 28 elementary boys with a 239.
