WOLFPACK WRESTLING - Three top-four finishers at Cadott; Wolfpack goes 2-1 in Flambeau quad
WOLFPACK WRESTLING
All four of Cornell-Gilman-Lake Holcombe’s wrestlers earned at least one win, including Taydyn Angell’s championship in the 215-pound weight class, for a successful outing for the Wolfpack on the boys’ side of Saturday’s Cadott Invitational.
Angell got three pins and a technical fall to power his way to his third tournament championship of the season. He now sits at 19-1.
Senior Lee Zagorski got to the 285pound semifinals and finished fourth. Lucas Halida and Preston Fredrickson finished ninth at 132 and 150 pounds, respectively.
The Wolfpack placed 13th in the team standings with 133 points, finishing ahead of Flambeau (101), Thorp/Owen-Withee (57), Bruce (53.5) and New Lisbon (17).
In a full 16-man bracket at 215 pounds, Angell was the top seed and went basically unchallenged. He pinned Arcadia’s Juan Barrientos in 1:25 in round one, needed 2:08 to earn a 17-2 technical fall over Cameron’s Derek Ewald in the quarterfinals and pinned Menasha senior Ronald Waldburger (18-9) in just 43 seconds in the semifinals. In the match against Ewald, Angell built a 15-2 firstperiod lead and got a reversal right away in the second period to end the match.
In the title match, Angell got a pin off his first takedown against Jackson Logghe (17-8), a senior from Glenwood City, in 1:14.
Zagorski improved to 8-5 with a 2-2 day in the 14-man 285-pound weight class. He pinned Jackson Whtish of Durand-Arkansaw off his second takedown at 1:43 in round one. Zagorski beat Whitehall’s Lane Huismann 4-2 in the quarterfinals, getting an escape and takedown in the third period to reverse a 1-0 deficit.
Zagorski was pinned in 43 seconds in the semifinals by eventual runner-up Micah Butler (21-7) of Hayward-Northwood. Cadott’s Anthony Glenz (6-8) pinned Zagorski in 2:18 to win the thirdplace match.
Fredrickson (4-3), a Cornell senior who has returned to the wrestling program after starting the winter in basketball, lost his first match in a 19-3 technical fall to Glenwood City’s Brock Wood but he didn’t lose again. He got a technical fall of his own, 18-0 over Barron’s Camden Valentine in 5:00 and then pinned Arcadia’s Derek Tamke (9-11) in the ninth-place match at 1:58.
At 132, Halida (7-6) lost his first match 12-0 to Barron’s Ethan Eriksen and then won his next two. He eked out a 4-3 win over Cadott’s Evan Lallemont, getting all of his points in the third period with an escape and a takedown. In the ninth-place match, he pinned New Lisbon’s Aidan Brown in 28 seconds.
Glenwood City won the boys tournament with 532.5 points, just two points ahead of Hayward-Northwood. Cadott was third with 407 points and Whitehall (357) was a distant fourth.
In the girls tournament, the Wolfpack’s Kaitlyn Madlon (6-8) went 3-1 in the round-robin 152-pound bracket and placed second. All of her matches ended in pins.
In the first round, Madlon got a quick takedown and near fall for a 7-0 lead and a second-period near fall led to the pin in 3:30 over Arcadia’s Linsy Cruz. She pinned Providence Kretzmann of River Falls in 45 seconds in round two. The weight class champion Lillian Gottwald of Hayward-Northwood (15-3) pinned Madlon in 1:36 in round three, but Madlon came back to pin Cadott’s Kaylee Stai in 4:45 in the last round. She led 18-4 at the time of the pin.
At 120 pounds, Aspen Person placed fifth and was 0-4 in her round-robin bracket. She lost by technical fall 22-3 to Journee Wood of Phillips, was pinned in 43 seconds by 25-2 Mary Prescott of Hudson, was pinned in 2:42 by Eve Rausch of Menasha and was pinned in 47 seconds by 20-4 Tessa York of Cadott.
The girls combined for 23 points to place 14th ahead of Medford (21.5), New Lisbon (11) and Whitehall (11). Cadott outscored Hudson 93-86 to win the team title. Menasha (73) was third.
The Wolfpack will be at Frederic tonight, Thursday, for a Lakeland Conference quad hosted by the Luck Co-op. The team will take on the host team and Unity in dual meets. From there, it’s on to the annual Ladysmith Invitational on Saturday with competition starting at 9 a.m.
The Wolfpack will host a Lakeland Conference quad in Cornell at 6 p.m. on Jan. 23 and will face Clear Lake and Turtle Lake-Clayton that night.
2-1 at quad
Cornell-Gilman-Lake Holcombe started Lakeland Conference competition Thursday by going 2-1 at the Flambeau Quad.
The Wolfpack won its first two dual meets. The first was an uneventful meet of forfeits with Bruce that Cornell-Gilman-Lake Holcombe won 36-12. Person at 120, Halida at 132, Fredrickson at 150, Sawyer Winger at 157, Angell at 215 and Zagorski at 138 won by forfeit. Bruce’s Kyle Whitcome and Levi Nyhagen took forfeits at 144 and 175 pounds.
The Wolfpack’s second dual was a tight 24-23 win over Flambeau. The key match was the first one. Flambeau’s Dakota Nelson rolled to a win over Halida at 132 pounds, but Halida stayed off his back as much as he could and kept Nelson to a 15-0 technical fall rather than getting pinned, saving the Wolfpack a team point. That wound up being the difference.
Angell pinned Jacob Taylor in 59 seconds at 215 pounds, Zagorski got a pin of Jesse Jiskra in 1:03 at 285 pounds, while Winger and Person took forfeits at 150 and 120 pounds.
Cole Schley pinned Fredrickson in 3:07 at 157 pounds while Kevin Verdegan and Quentin Zach earned forfeit wins for Flambeau at 190 and 126 pounds.
The Wolfpack and Shell Lake took 2-0 records into their third dual meets of the quad. The Lakers had a little too much depth and won it 33-24.
Shell Lake took command of the dual early, getting a forfeit win from Tanner Bandoli at 138 pounds and a pin in 1:45 from 2024 state qualifier Briar Naglosky over Fredrickson at 150. Winger got the Wolfpack on the board with a forfeit win at 157, but the Lakers got forfeit wins from Trey Bos at 175 pounds and Brock Naessen at 190 pounds to take a 30-6 lead.
Angell got a takedown with 15 seconds left in the first period of the 215-pound match and turned it into a pin at 1:58 over Steven Hoy. Zagorski got a takedown with 10 seconds left in the first period, reversed Jameson Buckridge early in the second and pinned him in 2:37.
Person took a forfeit at 120 to get the Wolfpack within 30-24 and give the team a shot to tie it, but at 132, Shell Lake’s Liam Hammond got out to a 10-2 lead through two periods against Halida. Halida gave up quick reversal in the third period to go down 12-2, but he didn’t quit. He got five points with a reversal and near fall, but couldn’t quite get to a potential pin and lost 14-8, clinching Shell Lake’s 33-24 win.
