MEDFORD WRESTLING - Raiders find some success in three different wrestling tournaments
MEDFORD WRESTLING
The Medford wrestlers were scattered on Saturday, wrestling in three different locations around the state.
Four varsity wrestlers competed in the always-tough Freedom Irish Invitational with three of them winning their final placement matches.
At 175 pounds, senior Paxton Rothmeier had a solid day, going 3-1 to place fifth. His day started with pool competition, where he went 1-1. He pinned Osceola’s Tristan Campeau in 1:08 and was pinned by 29-5 Vincent Cook of Freedom, who wound up finishing third.
Moving on to the bracket to determine fifth through eighth place, Rothmeier won a good first match 9-5 over Hortonville’s Kael Konrad. After a scoreless first period, Rothmeier got an escape and takedown to grab a 4-0 lead in the second period. His lead went down to 5-4 early in the third, but an escape and then a takedown with 33 seconds left sealed it.
In the fifth-place match, Rothmeier pinned Kyle Madlena of Stevens Point at 3:38 after he had built an 11-3 lead.
At 150 pounds, senior Parker Lissner lost his first two matches, but finished strong with three straight wins to take ninth.
He went 1-2 in his opening pool, losing 14-4 to 22-9 Cody Meyer of Osceola and getting pinned in 1:44 by 17-9 Collin Schroeder of Hortonville. Lissner was down just 6-4 to start the third period against Meyer when a takedown and near fall took him out of it. Lissner (15-13) was a 15-4 winner over Scott Daniels of Shiocton.
In the bracket to determine ninth through 12th place, Lissner first won a wild 17-16 decision over Slinger’s Greyson Tonsor. Down 14-7 to start the third, Lissner got six quick points with a reversal and four-point near fall. After getting reversed, Lissner got an escape. With Tonsor having been warned for stalling, Lissner took him down with seven seconds left for three points and the win. In the ninth-place match, Lissner got two quick takedowns and turned the second one into a pin at 1:51 over Kaden Kakes of Two Rivers.
Sophomore Jordan Lavin (10-13) won the ninth- to 11th-place pool at 120 pounds. He had a tough start in pool competition, getting pinned in 3:03 by Keagan Berg of Osceola and in 2:00 by 120 Lane Andersen of Amery.
But Lavin turned that around in his consolation bracket, dominating Appleton North’s Thomas Thao in a 17-1 technical fall that ended at 2:36 and pinning Sam Riddle of Stevens Point in just 29 seconds.
Senior Nick Malchow was 0-5 and placed 12th at 113 pounds, losing three matches by pin and two by technical fall. One technical fall was to 27-2 Kolten Bollig of Evansville and a loss by pin was to 21-8 Cooper Herzig of Muskego.
The four Raider wrestlers combined for 22 points and placed 16th in the team standings. Auburndale edged Evansville 173-170.5 to win the team title. Freedom (165.5), Hortonville (134.5) and Denmark (133.5) weren’t far behind.
Girls at Cadott
At the Cadott Invitational, sophomore Avery Losiewicz continued to dominate winning the girls 132-pound championship.
Losiewicz improved to 20-4 with three wins in her bracket. Drawing a bye into the quarterfinals, she pinned Luca Burcaw of McDonell Central-Elk Mound in 1:18 and then pinned Valencia de la Torre of Auburndale (19-8) in 39 seconds in the semifinals. In the title match, Losiewicz rolled to 15-0 technical fall over Arcadia’s Kalyce Sobotta (15-3). The match ended at 4:36, recording three takedowns, one in each period and tacking on a couple of near falls.
At 138 pounds, Bridget Wesle lost her only contested match by pin at 3:01 to 18-3 Anna Krizan of Ladysmith. Grace Dexter of Cameron was credited later with a win over Wesle by medical forfeit.
Losiewicz’s 21.5 points put Medford in 15th place in the team standings ahead of New Lisbon and Whitehall, who both scored 11 points. Cornell-Gilman-Lake Holcombe was 1.5 points ahead. Cadott won the tournament with 93 points, outscoring Hudson (86), Menasha (73) and McDonell-Elk Mound (64).
