Tuesday night prep scoreboard
Due to the national day of mourning for former U.S. President Jimmy Carter on Thursday, there was an early deadline for this week’s issue of The Star News.
You can read more about these events from Tuesday night in next week’s paper, but here is a quick rundown of the action in Taylor County from Tuesday night.
Girls basketball In Medford, the host Raiders snapped a seven-game losing streak by crushing Antigo 68-27 in Great Northern Conference play.
Taylor Klingbeil led the Raiders with 22 points. Kayla Baumgartner scored 16, Rylee Hraby hit double figures with 11 and Laney Hraby added a season-high nine points.
In a key Marawood North showdown, the Phillips Loggers defeated host Rib Lake 61-44, knocking the Redmen out of first place in the conference. Now 4-3 in the Marawood and 6-4 overall, Rib Lake trails 5-2 Phillips and Prentice by a game in the North standings with a very good Wisconsin Rapids Assumption squad coming to Rib Lake for a 5:30 p.m. tip on Friday.
The Gilman Pirates got back over the .500 mark at 6-5 by defeating host Thorp 59-36 in non-conference play. Gilman got out to a 31-10 halftime lead, was able to empty the bench and coasted to the victory.
Gilman gets back into Eastern Cloverbelt Conference play tonight, Thursday, at Spencer. The Pirates will complete their first round of league play by hosting Columbus Catholic Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.
Boys basketball The Medford Raiders broke their fivegame losing streak in convincing fashion, jumping ahead 21-4 and never looking back in a 67-44 Great Northern Conference win at Antigo. The Raiders move to 2-1 in the GNC and 4-5 overall, heading into a key mid-season stretch. They’ll host always-tough La Crosse Central today, Thursday, in nonconference play before getting Northland Pines at Raider Hall Friday. The Eagles stunned Mosinee Tuesday 53-49.
Nick Krause scored 17 of his game-high 20 points in the second half for Medford. Hayden Koester scored 14 of his 19 in the first half. Will Daniels added 14.
In the Eastern Cloverbelt, Neillsville handled visiting Gilman 71-43 to stay in the race it tries to keep pace with unbeaten Loyal (4-0, 10-0), who happens to be visiting Gilman next on Friday at 7:15 p.m.
Gymnastics Medford-Colby got a big night from sophomore Raylin Rothmeier but dropped its Great Northern Conference Large Division opener 132.225-128.075 to visiting Stevens Point at Medford Area Elementary School.
Rothmeier was the meet’s all-around champion with 34.175 points and that included event wins on the balance beam with a 9.0 and on the vault with an 8.75. She was second in the floor exercise at 8.775, while Shayla Radlinger was third at 8.75.
Delaina Meyer led the Raiders on the uneven bars, taking fourth with a 7.9 and she was fifth on the floor with an 8.45.
Boys swim In the MASH pool, the Rhinelander Hodags dominated in a double-dual meet with Great Northern Conference rivals Medford and Shawano-Seymour.
Medford nearly beat Shawano-Seymour, falling 80-71. The Raiders lost to Rhinelander 128-37, and the Hodags outscored the Thunder Hawks 130-35.
Logan Rouiller was third overall and first against the Thunder Hawks in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:38.07 and did the same in the 500-yard freestyle at 6:03.26.
Mason Reimann was third overall and first against Shawano-Seymour in the 50yard freestyle at 24.99 seconds and he was second overall and first against Shawano-Seymour in the 100-yard butterfly at 1:06.25. Mann was third overall and first against Shawano-Seymour in the 100yard breaststroke at 1:23.97.
Boys hockey Jacob Doyle’s first-period power-play goal put Medford up 1-0, but the Raiders scored no more in a 4-1 loss to Spooner-Shell Lake in non-conference play at the Simek Recreation Center.
Doyle’s shot from the blue line was assisted by Cade Wellman and came at the 7:31 mark of the first period.
The Rails, though, score three goals in the second period, including one with 18 seconds left by Owen Dernovsek. Dernovsek added an insurance goal 9:18 into the third period.
Spooner-Shell Lake had a slim 30-25 advantage in shots on goal. Talan Albers had 26 saves. Both teams were one for three on power plays.
Girls hockey The Medford Raiders traveled west and were humbled by Chippewa Falls-Menomonie 9-1.
Zayleah Leonhardt’s unassisted goal tied the game at 1-1 10:49 into the first period, but the Sabers scored three more before the period ended and scored five in the second period to blow it wide open.
Chloe Pipkorn had 23 saves for Medford.
Curling The Medford boys and girls played host to Stevens Point on Tuesday. Stevens Point historically has a strong program and was going to be a tough test coming off the winter break. The boys lost 11-1, conceding after six ends. The varsity girls kept things close in every end but were outshot by Point’s skip, losing 9-3.
