Marathon boys win sixth straight

Marathon’s varsity boys basketball squad has been a second-half team lately in its wins against a pair of Cloverbelt East opponents. Marathon was losing, 2520, to Neillsville in Friday’s road game before outscoring the Warriors, 24-19, in the second half to force overtime. The Red Raiders then outscored the Warriors, 11-8, in overtime to escape with a 55-52 win.
Junior guard Ean Shuda led a balanced Red Raiders scoring attack with 12 points against the Warriors. Junior forward Drew Woelfel contributed 10 points and junior guard True Thurs added nine while senior guard Cody Radtke and sophomore guard Sawyer Berens had eight apiece.
Woelfel paced Marathon with 12 rebounds and five assists. Thurs added seven rebounds. Sophomore forward Garrett Bracewell, Berens and Radtke contributed three assists each. Junior guard Landon Sneider, Shuda and Radtke led Marathon with two assists each.
Marathon won its sixth straight game in Monday’s 75-62 road win against Colby. Marathon was behind, 34-33, to Colby at halftime before outscoring the Hornets, 42-28, in the second half.
Thurs led four Marathon players in double- digit scoring with 16 points. Shuda and Woelfel added 13 points apiece and Berens had 12. Sophomore guard Logan Peters contributed nine points. Thurs also led the Red Raiders with 10 rebounds while Woelfel added seven and Radtke had five.
Radtke paced the Red Raiders with five assists. Sneider contributed four assists while Thurs and Woelfel added three apiece. Bracewell, Thurs and Woelfel led Marathon with two steals each.
Marathon improves its overall record to 7-3 this season.
Tiger boys beat Orioles
Stratford’s varsity boys basketball squad upended Stanley-Boyd, 57-35, in Friday’s home game. Stratford improves its overall record to 9-1 this season. The Tigers are ranked No. 5 in this week’s Division 4 wissports.net coaches poll.
Senior guard Drew Bruesewitz led Stratford with 23 points, five assists and three steals. Senior forward Caden Foster added nine points. Junior guard Brooks Vanderhoof contributed three assists and junior forward Brady Berg had two steals.
‘Cat boys lose to T-Birds
Edgar’s varsity boys basketball team lost, 52-47, to Lakeland Union on the road Friday. The Wildcats now have an overall record of 3-7 this season.
Junior guard Gavin Mauer led Edgar with 12 points while senior guard Leyton Schuett and sophomore forward Carson Nowak added 10 points apiece. Schuett paced the Wildcats with eight rebounds and Nowak added six. Junior guard Tucker Streit led Edgar with seven assists. Nowack paced the team with three steals while Mauer, Streit and senior forward Ty Schnelle added two steals each.
Athens boys fall
The Athens varsity boys basketball team lost, 73-55, to Chequamegon on Monday at home. Individual player statistics were not available. The Bluejays now have a 17 overall record this season.
Edgar girls beat Cardinals
Edgar’s varsity girls basketball team won its first Marawood South Conference game this season on Tuesday with a 51-32 road win against Newman Catholic. Individual player statistics were not available before the newspaper was printed. Edgar improves its record to 1-5 in the Mara-

The Wildcats lost, 49-34, to the Owen-Withee Blackhawks Friday on the road. Owen-Withee has a 9-1 overall record this season. Sophomore Natallya Radke led Edgar with 11 points, seven rebounds and five steals against the Blackhawks. Junior Savannah Koepke added nine points and three steals. Junior Brandi Halvorsen chipped in eight points. Senior Addisyn Trawicki led the Wildcats with three blocks.
Raider girls’ streak ends
Marathon’s varsity girls basketball squad had its seven-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday with a 42-33 road loss to Auburndale. Marathon and Auburndale now have identical records this season at 4-2 in the Marawood South Conference and 8-2 overall. Junior Emma Love led the Red Raiders with nine points and junior Myles Haehlke added seven.
The Red Raiders beat the Northland Pines Eagles, 48-25, on Friday at home. Emma Love led Marathon with 15 points and Haehlke added 13. Haehlke paced the Red Raiders with six rebounds in the win.
Tiger girls lose third straight
Stratford’s varsity girls basketball team lost to a tough Wisconsin Rapids Assumption squad, 55-45, on Tuesday at home. Stratford has now lost three straight games since winning nine consecutive games to start the season. The Tigers now have a 61 record in the Marawood South Conference while the Royals remain unbeaten in the conference at 6-0. Stratford has a 9-3 overall record and Assumption is 9-1.
Sophomore guard Carly Pankratz led Stratford with 11 points against Assumption while junior Tria Tubbs added 10 and junior MyKayla Stueber had eight. Senior Daisy Yoder sank a half court shot before halftime and finished the game with seven points.
Assumption is ranked third in this week’s wissports.net Division 5 coaches poll. Assumption lost its only game, 5954, to Stevens Point Pacelli (9-2) in their game prior to playing Stratford.
Stratford lost to another tough squad in Bonduel, 57-52, on the road Friday. Carly Pankratz led Stratford with 12 points and three assists. Yoder added 11 points and seven rebounds. Senior guard Kayla Casperson contributed seven points and three steals. Tubbs also had seven points and she led the Tigers with 10 rebounds.
‘Jay girls fall
The Athens varsity girls basketball squad lost to Prentice, 47-39, Tuesday on the road. Individual Athens player statistics were not available before the newspaper was printed. Athens falls to 1-5 in the Marawood North Conference and 1-7 overall this season. Prentice is tied with Philips with 5-2 records in the Marawood North. The Lady Buccaneers improve to 7-4 overall this season.
Athens lost, 44-27, to Marshfield Columbus in Friday’s road game. Senior forward Bailey Hanke led the Bluejays with seven points and senior guard Brianna Sheahan added six points.
