The Spencer Rockets varsity girls basketball team traveled to Edgar for a non-conference game Dec. 23, their final game before taking a break for Christmas. Although the Rockets did not secure the win, they fought hard and one of their players achieved a personal record that was noteworthy in its own right.

The competitive battle started with contributions from four Spencer players and five Edgar players in the first half. Spencer was trailing only by three at the end of the half, with a score of 25-22. The Rockets bumped up their scoring output in the second half, picking up 31 more points. Twenty-one of those points came from Autumn Davis, Spencer's leading scorer, including three baskets from 3-point range.

However, as much as Spencer picked up the pace in the second half, the Wildcats did even more so. With 41 additional points, the Wildcats secured the 66-53 win. Despite the outcome not being what they wanted, the Rockets showed a marked improvement from last year, when they lost to Edgar by 22 at home.

Davis, a junior, was the star of the show in last week's game. Besides her three 3-pointers in the latter half, she also had three of them in the first half. She went 6-for-8 at the free throw line and completed six 2-point field goals. She scored 36 points in all, a career high and 10 points more than the next closest scorer. Hitting that milestone was just the next step in Davis' progression as an athlete. She has been averaging 20.3 points per game (PPG) this season. According to WisSports.net data, Davis' PPG average was 15.6 last season and 14 the season before that. Prior to last week's game, Davis' career high points in a game was 31. Last season, she earned 31 points at Loyal on Jan. 18. In the 2022-23 season, she scored 30 points in Jan. 5 game at Colby. Davis currently leads the Cloverbelt-East girls in PPG, with the next closest being Neillsville's Sydney Subke at 17.9.
