Medford’s Avery Losiewicz earned her first tournament championship of the wrestling season and Bridget Wesle added a fifth-place finish in her weight class in the girls’ side of Saturday’s Shawano High School Holiday Classic.
Losiewicz was the top seed in the seven-wrestler 138pound girls bracket and drew a bye into the semifinals where she pinned Shawano’s Jacey Cowden in 47 seconds. She needed just 47 seconds again in the championship match, where she pinned Shawano’s Brynn Hannes to improve to 7-2 for the season.
Wesle won by pin in her opening match in the 145-pound bracket, which included six girls. She pinned Menasha’s Taylor Boyd in 3:04. A 17-0 semifinal loss by technical fall to Shawano’s Adalyn Barkley sent Wesle to the consolation side of the bracket. There, she was pinned in a semifinal match by Marinette’s Anica Suchan in 2:40 and won the fifth-place match over Green Bay West’s Jessalin Grigg by pin in 35 seconds. Wesle is now 6-6 on the season.
The two Raider sophomores combined for 37 points, putting Medford 12th in the team standings of the girls tournament. Shawano scored 174.5 points to win it, while Bonduel was second with 153.5 and Marinette was third with 80.
In the boys varsity tournament, Medford had four entrants and totaled 19 points, good for 23rd in the team standings.
Senior Parker Lissner went 2-2 at 150 pounds. He opened with a pin over Marinette’s Mason Floriano, just as the second period ended at the 4:00 mark. Eventual weight class champion Colton Klug, a 20-1 sophomore from Brillion, pinned Lissner in 3:30 in the quarterfinals.
Lissner won his first consolation match, pinning Marshfield’s Dalton Hagen in 1:04, but his day ended with a loss by pin to 12-4 Kody Popelka of Shawano in 2:49. Lissner is 8-7 through the first three weeks of the season.
At 120 pounds, senior Nick Malchow went 1-2 in the tournament. He was pinned in his first match by Antigo’s Jonathan Wissbroecker in 3:47. Malchow (4-6) pinned Bonduel’s John Parsons in 1:38 in his first consolation match, but Eli Camps of Peshtigo ended his run in the next round with a pin in 1:20.
Sophomore Ayden Tyznik went 1-2 at 113 pounds. He lost a good first-round match with Freedom freshman Oscar Rodriguez 11-8 and then came back with a win by pin in 4:25 over Jordan Ostrom of Two Rivers. Garrett Frahm of Athens eliminated Tyzik (4-8) with a 9-2 win by decision.
At 126 pounds, Jordan Lavin (4-8) lost both of his matches. He was pinned in 1:33 by Freedom’s Jayden Cornell and was pinned in 2:38 by Green Bay West’s Preston Madison.
Freedom won the team championship with 259 points, followed by Brillion (202), Marshfield (117), Valders (112) and Oconto (108.5).
Medford had more success in Shawano’s JV tournament on Friday, led by second-place finishes from Ashton Noland and Jackson Mayer.
Noland got his in the 175-190 B bracket. He got to the championship match with a 5-0 win over Eric Buchanan of Appleton North and a pin of Lakeland’s Zac Amershek in 1:36. Appleton North’s Joban Singh pinned Noland in 1:56 in the final.
Mayer got to the final in the 243-259 pound bracket with two pins. He stuck Clintonville’s Ryan Gauthier in 1:18 and Green Bay West-East-Southwest’s Angelo Sullivan-Bijeau in 2:57. Brock Sperberg of Shawano pinned Mayer in the championship in 27 seconds.
Preston Lyman took third for Medford in the 112-120 pound bracket. He pinned Lakeland’s Landon Gray-Ives in 1:22 in the quarterfinals but then lost 4-0 to Pulaski’s Carson Daniels in the semifinals. Lyman pinned Peshtigo’s Nick Mans in 21 seconds in the consolation semifinal and then stuck Clintonville’s Saul Adaya in 2:49 in the third-place match.
Levi Zuleger went 1-2 in the 138-144 weight class, getting a 3-0 quarterfinal win over Jack Baker of Green Bay West-East-Southwest. Ian Stickney went 1-2 in the 215-234 weight class, getting a 10-6 quarterfinal decision over Gabriel Brunette of Luxemburg-Casco. He nearly got to the final, but lost 4-1 in the sudden victory portion of overtime to Andrew Yeager of Shawano in the semifinals.
Corey McVicker went 0-2 in the 132144 A bracket, losing 5-0 to Isaias Noria of Two Rivers and 12-2 to Liam Torres of Oshkosh North. In the 132-138 bracket, Ahrlen Lekie was pinned by Collin Piper of Shawano and Jackson Blashe of Clintonville.
