Maximum effort is propelling Hornets forward

By Ginna Young

The Cadott boys wrestling program had a busy week, as they competed in a dual and at the ever-challenging Devils Duals.

Beginning their week, Cadott headed to Melrose-Mindoro for dual action, splitting the matches.

To begin, the Hornets took a commanding 65-0 win over Black River Falls, before falling to Galesville-Ettrick-Trempleau-Melrose-Mindoro, 43-13.

“We have a young team and our athletes are learning how to battle an entire match,” said coach Josh Spaeth. “I am impressed with our effort and look forward to continued confidence to build in our athletes, each and every week.”

Then, it was off to Wisconsin Dells, for the annual Devils Duals, at the Woodside Dome.

First up, Cadott was in action against Muskego, which decided whether the Hornets would be in the championship or consolation bracket. Unfortunately, Cadott fell in that dual, 47-29, sending them to face Stoughton, in the consolation rounds, coming up with a 69-12 victory.

They then defeated Chippewa Falls, 37-31, before taking on Campbellsport, in the semi-finals, for the win, 52-23. In the first place match, Oconomowoc proved too much and claimed the victory, 66-18, meaning Cadott would have to wrestle for second place, again meeting Muskego, and again falling to them, 47-29.

“Our young team performed exceptionally well this weekend, showing tremendous poise and determination,” said Spaeth. “I couldn’t be prouder of our athletes – they gave maximum effort as individuals, which propelled the entire team forward.”

Individual results are promising for Cadott, as senior Kellen Blanchette went 3-0 on the day, while juniors Mitchell Reineke and Steven Williams, sophomore Brock Webster and freshman Oliver Sudbrink were all 4-1. Senior Kaleb Lodahl was 3-1, with sophomores Owen Fasbender and Jon Phelps, and freshman Ryker Moskiewicz all going 3-2.

Junior Monte Lodahl was 1-1, while sophomore Brenton Faber was 1-4, with junior Anthony Glenz 0-3 and freshman Aiydan Sonnentag going 0-4.

“Competing against several Division 1 schools, we held our own and advanced to the consolation bracket finals,” said Spaeth. “We wrapped up the weekend with a 3-2 dual meet record, a fantastic accomplishment for this group.”
