RIB LAKE GIRLS BASKETBALL

A game Rib Lake controlled nearly slipped away midway through the second half Friday, but the Redmen remained poised and regained command with a game-closing 18-4 run that sealed their 5739 win over visiting Edgar.

The late run featured some of Rib Lake’s best offensive execution on a night where the defenses dominated, forcing a combined 58 turnovers and just 33 shots were made on 104 combined attempts from the field. The Redmen forced 35 of those turnovers and made 20 of their 57 shots, which was enough for them to improve to 5-1 overall.

At 4-0 in the Marawood North, Rib Lake has opened up an early one-game lead over 3-1 Phillips in the league standings.

A 10-0 first-half run keyed Rib Lake’s ability to take a 32-22 halftime lead in Friday’s Marawood crossover game with the Wildcats. The run broke open a 12-10 game and included an Avery Niemi score, 3-pointers by Kiana Dallmann and Isabelle Gumz and a Tessa Weik score off a Gumz assist.

Rib Lake’s lead remained in the eightto 11-point range through the remainder of the half.

Baskets by Weik and Madilyn Blomberg extended Rib Lake’s lead to 12 at 39-27 with 12 minutes to go, when the Redmen went cold for a stretch and Edgar made its push to get back in it.

Emma Hartway got loose underneath for an easy score. After missed free throws by Rib Lake, Natallya Radke got a 3pointer to fall at the 10:15 mark and Brandi Halvorsen dropped in another 3ball at 8:25 to cut Rib Lake’s lead to 39-35.

It took the Redmen just 15 seconds to counter that shot as Dallmann made an aggressive move and hit a floater from the right baseline. The Redmen got a defensive stop and got the ball to Emma Tlusty who drove and scored from the left side, giving Rib Lake a 43-35 lead and forcing an Edgar timeout. The Redmen got the ball back off an unforced Edgar turnover and Tlusty fed Madison Grzanna for a basket in the post. Blomberg scored off an inbound play, Niemi hit one of two free throws and Addison Gumz drove from the left side and scored to make it 50-35 with 4:35 left. The Wildcats never recovered, dropping to 0-2 in Marawood play and 1-4 overall.

Tlusty led a balanced Rib Lake scoring attack with 11 points. She had three rebounds and three steals. Dallmann hit double figures with 10 points and added four rebounds, three steals and two assists. Weik had nine points, five rebounds and two assists.

Addison Gumz and Niemi scored eight points apiece. Gumz had three rebounds and two assists. Niemi grabbed five boards. Isabelle Gumz had five points, three assists and three steals. Blomberg had four points and six rebounds. Tahlia Scheithauer had team-highs of five assists and four steals. Grzanna had two points and four rebounds.

Halverson’s nine points paced Edgar and Radke had eight.

Rib Lake has its second Marawood crossover game Friday at Marathon. It will be game two of a boys/girls doubleheader. The boys game tips at 5:30 p.m., followed by the girls at about 7:15 p.m. Rib Lake hosts Prentice on Dec. 20.
