Cornell metes out payback with a win over Flambeau

By Ginna Young Stinging from their first conference loss since 2019, the Cornell volleyball program was only too happy to welcome Flambeau for some redemption.

Oct. 8 vs. Flambeau (W 3-1) In their first match-up, Flambeau handed the Chiefs the loss and this time around, Cornell was ready to redeem themselves. In the Homecoming bout, Cornell went in with high spirits, which were dampened by the Falcons taking the first set, 25-22.

Those spirits were dampened, but not extinguished, as Cornell came roaring back to take the next three sets, for a 3-1 victory. Thanks to a big kill from senior Alyssa Bowe, the Chiefs moved closer to the Falcons, still down a point.

Senior Candice Spaeth replaced Bowe at the line, serving up three aces in a row, to take the set, 25-23.

“All were close until the end,” said coach Amy Lorenzen. “Candice was a strong server the rest of the evening and finished with eight aces.”

Also celebrated that night, was senior Bralee Schroeder, who earned her 1,000th career assist, with a set and attack to senior Briana Glaus, in the second set. Schroeder finished with 26 assists and 15 kills.

Junior Kallee Dekarske notched 15 assists and 5 kills, while Glaus came away with 14 kills and 15 digs. Bowe ended with 5 kills and 12 digs on the night, with sophomore Ishani Foulk recording 11 digs and 5 kills. Senior Richelle Raether rounded out the scoring with 6 kills and 5 aces.

“We’ve really turned it around and are motivated to win each game,” said Glaus.

Oct. 12 vs. Gilman (2-2) The Chiefs also took part in a weekend tournament at Gilman, where they went 2-2, placing fifth out of nine teams.
