Chiefs split league games

By Ginna Young

Cornell’s volleyball program is learning how to face challenges and problem solve, to get the wins over conference foes, which was proven in the week’s games.

Sept. 24 vs. Winter (L 3-1)

To open the week, the undefeated Winter Warriors came to call on the Chiefs, but the match started out rocky, with Cornell dropping the first set, 25-15.

“We let Winter get a big lead at the beginning of three sets, that we lost, with a lot of our missed offensive opportunities and it was challenging to gain momentum on our side,” said coach Amy Lorenzen.

The Chiefs battled back to claim the second set, 25-16, but ultimately, Winter took the victory home, by winning the remaining sets, 25-18.

Senior Bralee Schroeder ended the night with 13 kills, 17 assists and 18 digs, while senior Briana Glaus had 15 kills and 21 digs. Senior Alyssa Bowe followed that up with 11 digs and junior Kallee Dekarse notched 12 digs and 16 assists. Sophomore Ishani Foulk rounded out the scoring, with 17 digs.

Sept. 26 vs. Birchwood (W 3-0)

A couple days later, the Chiefs were on the road to Birchwood, where they earned the shutout win, 25-17, 25-14 and 25-13.

“They demonstrated the ability to rise to the challenge, of putting a new lineup out on the floor, to get the victory over Birchwood,” said Lorenzen.

Cornell is now 4-3 in conference action.
