In competitive battle, SC defeats LG by 4 at home
The Loyal-Greenwood and Spencer/Columbus football teams met on the Spencer High School football field on Oct. 4, with the close match-up between the two teams ending with a 34-30 victory by the Rockets. The Rockets struck from the air while LG kept to the ground for a majority of their plays, with the Rockets passing for 141 yards to LG’s 62 yards and LG running for 160 yards over SC’s 43 yards during the game.
Mason Wolf of SC was one of the top players of the night, scoring three of the team’s touchdowns, including a 90-yard kickoff return at the end of the second quarter. He had 43 rushing yards on seven carries during the night.
“I really thought our seniors stepped up tonight,” said SC head coach Jason Gorst. “Mason Wolf was a big difference-maker on offense, defense, and special teams. Loyal/Greenwood was a physical team that kept battling all night. I was proud of the resilience our guys showed by scoring late and getting a late stop.”
On offense, Jack Hoeper led the Rockets in rushing with 51 yards on 10 carries. Mac Konieczny was the top receiver, with 67 reception yards.
For LG, Cain Toufar led the team in rushing with 160 yards on nine carries, scoring two touchdowns for Loyal, including one off an 80-yard run at the beginning of the third quarter. He also had 58 receiving yards during the game. On defense, Eli Zettler had one interception for LG.
