By Ginna Young After away meets all year, Cadott’s cross country program was at home Sept. 24, at Whispering Pines Golf, with 21 schools represented.

“The weather was incredible, with a temperature of 68 degrees at the start of the high school girls race,” said coach Dan Yeager. “With a beautiful course and weather, all that was left was to race.”

Cadott’s boys team ran a strong race, placing fifth, while every runner met a personal best. Individually, sophomore Beau Steinke placed highest for the Hornets, ending in fifth, with a time of 17:30.2, followed by junior Saibyn Will, in 27th (19:13.4). Freshman Jacob Pilgrim continues to show hard work, as he crossed the finish line in 42nd (19:53.1), with sophomore Kaden Roen right behind, for 35th (20:03.1).

Sophomore Jon Phelps followed that up with a 54th place (20:36.3) and sophomore Max Demulling shaved off 30 seconds from his previous best, to place 103rd (23:50.4).

On the girls’ side, the team placed ninth, with all three of the Weggen sisters leading the way. Coming in 19th, was senior Cortney Weggen (22:44.4), while senior Lyla Weggen was 27th (23:20.5) and senior Mia Weggen was 61st (26:31.2). Following that, was freshman Saffron Riley-Starck, in 79th (28:38.9), with sophomore Tessa York a step behind for 80th (28:39.1) and junior Marley Mengel in 82nd (28:41.6).

Unable to compete because of injury, were seniors Adrianna Goodman and McKenna Steinke; juniors Josie Roth and Iszy Sonnnentag; and sophomores Garrett Engel and Klayton Handrick.

Yeager was very grateful to have a home meet under their belts and to Whispering Pines for hosting the event.

“Also, as coaches, we greatly appreciate (retired) coach Tom Weiss coming back and helping us learn the ropes, as we set up the course,” said Yeager. “We look forward to hosting the Sectional race Oct. 26.”

Alex Dixon worked on his breathing, as the Lake Holcombe junior completed the first leg of the Stanley-Boyd cross country course Sept. 12.
