Stratford’s varsity boys cross country squad took third place among 16 small schools that had full teams at Friday’s Nightfall Classic 715 at RiversEdge Golf Course in Marshfield. There were a total of 23 small schools with runners in the race. The Marathon boys placed fourth.

Tigers head coach Kevin “Tiny” Michalski was pleased with his boys team’s performance.

“The guys ran great,” he said. “We had seven of the 11 runners obtain their best times of the year so far. Taking third was a great finish for the team with all the tough competition that was at this meet.”

Phillips won both the small school boys and girls Nightfall Classic 715 team championships, just like they both won Marawood Conference championships last season. The Cedar Grove-Belgium boys cross country squad, which is ranked No. 1 in Division 3 in the Wisconsin Cross Country Coaches poll, took second place at the Nightfall Classic 715.

The Prentice/Rib Lake boys cross country squad, which didn’t compete in the Nightfall Classic 715, are ranked No. 2 in Division 3. The Phillips boys are ranked No. 5, Marathon No. 7 and Stratford No. 9. There are so many Marawood Conference boys teams ranked high in Division 3 this season that it’ll be an interesting conference championship race at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, hosted by Prentice/Rib Lake at Timms Hill.

Michalski still likes his Stratford boys team’s chances of competing for a conference title this season.

“Phillips and Prentice/Rib Lake are both great teams who are ranked in the top five in the state, but if we can stay healthy, I believe we can give them a run at the conference meet,” he said. “We have only had a full team in two meets this year so hopefully by the time the conference race rolls around, we will be at full strength.”

Stratford senior Cree DeFoe placed the highest, ninth, among local runners. There were 164 small school boy runners competing in the Nightfall Classic 715. DeFoe ran the 5,000-meter race in 16 minutes, 49.40 seconds. Marathon sophomore Logan Peters was the next highest local boys competitor by taking 12th place in 17:29.20. Stratford senior Ethan Heeg placed 17th in 17:50.30 and Marathon sophomore Brady Annis was 19th in 17:52.
