The Wisconsin Badgers football team hasn’t perfected running offensive coordinator Phil Longo’s air raid offense yet. Badgers redshirt senior starting defensive lineman Ben Barten’s high school alma mater, Stratford, meanwhile had a tremendous amount of success throwing the football in Friday’s 49-0 road win against Colby.
Stratford racked up 429 yards and six touchdowns through the air compared to only 59 yards on the ground against Colby. Tigers senior quarterback Jack Tubbs completed 14 of 17 passes for 403 yards and five touchdowns. Junior backup quarterback Brady Berg threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to senior Cayden Leonhardt with just over two minutes left in the game.
Tigers receivers feasted on the Hornet’s defensive scheme that is more designed to stop the run rather than the pass. Senior Alec Chapel caught two passes for 96 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Caleb Wrensch led the Tigers in receiving yards with two catches for 100 yards and a touchdown. Senior Jett Schoenherr grabbed five catches for 93 yards and a touchdown. Junior Coltan Breit caught three passes for 82 yards and a touchdown.
Stratford only scored seven points in the opening quarter on Tubbs’ 65-yard touchdown pass to Schoenherr and junior Mason Miller’s successful extra point kick. The Tigers then erupted to score 28 points within a span of almost nine minutes left in the second quarter. Tubbs threw a 75yard touchdown to Wrensch, ran for a sixyard touchdown and then threw two straight touchdown passes to Chapel of 76 and 20 yards. Mason Miller made all seven of his extra point kicks in the game.
The Tigers led, 35-0, at halftime. Surprisingly, neither team scored in the third quarter but there was a running clock during the entire second half. Tubbs threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Breit in the fourth quarter and then Berg hooked up with Leonhardt for a 26-yard passing touchdown.
Wrensch led Stratford’s defense with eight tackles while fellow seniors Walker Weis and Chapel had seven tackles apiece. Senior Xander Curtice recorded six tackles and a sack. Tubbs and juniors Drew Gage and Brooks Vanderhoof added five tackles each.
Stratford improves its record to 4-0 in the CWC-Large and 6-0 overall this season while Colby falls to 2-2 in the CWCLarge and 2-4 overall. Stratford will attempt to spoil Marathon’s homecoming football game at 7 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 4.
