The Colby/Abbotsford swim team improved to 4-0 in their Great Northern Conference meets after defeating the Antigo Red Robins at home last Thursday afternoon. The co-op outscored their GNC foe 95-63 to remain unbeaten, finishing with at least a second place finish in all twelve events while recording 23 new personal bests.

While the hosting Colby/Abby squad only won one more event than the Red Robins, their depth allowed them to pull away. The co-op took first and second in two events and grabbed first and third in the other four events that they won. Antigo could not quite produce the same results in their best events, as they only claimed one other top three spot across the five events that they ended up winning, a third-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle.

Colby/Abby’s depth was at play early on, where the co-op was able to field two relay teams in the 200-yard medley relay to Antigo’s one. The relay team of Madisyn Schraufnagel, Brezlyn Boyer, Jordan Jakel and Chloe Cihlar put up a time of 2:00.64 to defeat the Red Robin relay by three seconds. The second co-op relay of Hannah Brehm, Sage Lueth, Kate Sheahan and McKinley Meyer took third with a time of 2:38.37.

The co-op then took the top two spots in the 200-yard freestyle as Cihlar snagged the win with a time of 2:13.49 and Ella Baumann fended off Antigo’s Alexis Federman for second, putting up a time of 2:27.55. The Red Robins were able to snatch their first victory of the day in the 200-yard IM that followed, but Bryleigh Boyer and Lueth were able to claim second and third for Colby/Abby, putting up times of 2:47.50 and 3:12.25 respectively.

Antigo’s best event of the evening was the 50-yard freestyle, where they were able to claim three of the top four spots. Jakel was able to break up the Red Robin’s party by snagging second place in the race, putting up a time of 28.64. The visitors followed up with a third straight event victory in the 100-yard butterfly, but a second place finish from Schraufnagel with a time of 1:05.96 and a third place finish courtesy of Jakel with a time of 1:08.35 mitigated the damage.

The home team then pulled away by taking first and third in the next three events. Brezlyn Boyer won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:00.86 and Baumann was only two-tenths of a second off from picking up a second place finish with a time of 1:04.59. Cihlar then won the 500-yard freestyle by posting a time of 6:09.23 and Sheahan finished third after completing the longest event of the day with a time of 7:13.10. The Colby/ Abby relay team of Brezlyn Boyer, Jakel, Schraufnagel and Cihlar then rejoined forces to grab their second win of the day in the 200-yard freestyle, edging out the Antigo relay by two-tenths of a second by posting a time of 1:49.16.

Schraufnagel and Sheahan went second and third in the 100-yard backstroke, putting up times of 1:03.66 and 1:26.58 before Brezlyn Boyer picked up her fourth win of the day, taking the top spot in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:19.49. Lueth added a second place

for the co-op in the event with a time of 1:24.40.

The team of Baumann, Meyer, Hazel Flink and Bryleigh Boyer rounded out Colby/Abby’s performance in the 400yard freestyle relay, taking second with a time of 4:37.70.

With the victory, the team kept pace with Rhinelander at the top of the Great Northern Conference. They will have their toughest conference challenge of the season thus far this Thursday, Oct. 3 when they travel to Medford. The Red Raiders currently sit in third place in the conference with a 3-1 dual meet record, their only loss coming at the hands of Rhinelander. Medford bounced back from the loss with a 135-31 win over Tomahawk last Thursday. The meet is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
