Chieftains capture pair of big conference wins

By Ginna Young It was a good week for the Lake Holcombe volleyball squad, as they came away with a pair of wins.

Sept. 10 vs. Birchwood (W 3-0) To begin the week, Lake Holcombe hosted Birchwood, taking a shutout victory. The Bobcats kept it close in the opening sets, but Lake Holcombe pulled ahead enough to win, 25-19 and 25-20. Birchwood ran out of steam by the third set, allowing the Chieftains to take the victory, 2516.

“The team played well tonight, and was able to create and sustain their own energy and excitement,” said coach Beth Meddaugh. “Emmy Kirkman (senior) had a great night all around and did a fantastic job leading the team on the court.”

Kirkman and senior Chloe Lee led with 7 digs, while Kirkman also led in kills, with 5. Sophomore Chloe Irwin and freshman Taylor Dernovsek followed that with 4, and Lee had 12 assists, with freshman Breanna Frear adding 7 aces.

“It was nice to see everyone on the team hitting and earning kills tonight,” said Meddaugh. “It showed what a well-rounded team we have right now.”

Sept. 12 vs. Bruce (W 3-1) Two nights later, the Chieftains were off to Bruce, for a battle with the Raiders. Lake Holcombe won the first set, 25-20, as well as the second set, 25-22, but Bruce took the third set, 25-23.

“The communication on the court dropped in the third set, which, combined with a hot server on the Bruce team, led to us losing the third set,” said Meddaugh. “But, the team recovered nicely in the fourth set.”

The Chieftains weren’t going home without a win and took the fourth set, 25-23, for a 3-1 victory.

“Passing was good and hitting was solid,” said Meddaugh. “Chloe Lee did a great job at the baseline, with 95 percent serving and a season high 8 ace serves.”

Lee and Irwin led the team with 12 digs each, while Kirkman ended with 9 kills, followed by Frear, with 6 and Irwin, with 5.

Frear also notched 13 assists, with Lee right behind, with 12.

“I’m very proud of how well the girls played against Bruce,” said Meddaugh.
