Spencer-Columbus suffers loss vs. Weyauwega-Fremont
The Spencer-Columbus (SC) football team was unable to come away with the win after traveling to face a conference foe on Friday night. Weyauwega-Fremont (WF) took the lead early and held on to it to defeat SC. In the first quarter, WF scored a touchdown off a 4-yard run from Dawson Lind and Charles Mueller scored the extra point to make it 7-0. SC responded in the second quarter when Jack Hoeper completed a 3-yard run into the end zone and Mac Konieczny kicked the extra point, tying the score at 7. However, WF went on to score an additional touchdown and a field goal in the second, as well as two more touchdowns in the third, to go ahead 31-7.
Not ready to go down without a fight, SC retaliated with a touchdown of their own to finish off the third quarter. Hoeper punched it in on a 1-yard run and Konieczny earned the 2-point conversion to increase SC’s point total to 15. Then in the fourth, Konieczny received a 4-yard pass from Devlin Timmler for a touchdown. The 2-point conversion attempt failed, but it put SC within striking distance at 31-21. However, shortly after that, WF’s Kameron Zielke completed a 5-yard run into the end zone and Charles Mueller got the kick to send SC up 38-21. SC ran out of time to score again and that ended up being the final score.
Timmler was SC’s leading passer, with 79 yards. Hoeper led in rushing and receiving, with 132 rushing yards and 25 receiving yards. Carter Luepke had the next most rushing yards, with 18. Teddy Meyer had 21 receiving yards.
Defensively, Konieczny was his team’s leading tackler, with four tackles. Mason Wolf had three, while Ryan Bernick, Drew Lang and Brody Casperson each had two.
Konieczny had two kickoffs for 105 yards total, with his long kick being 55 yards.
SC actually got off more plays than WF, with 66 compared to WF’s 47. However, WF had 326 total yards while SC only had 269. While the two teams were pretty even in rushing yards, when it came to passing yards, WF had significantly more, with 130 to SC’s 79.
