MEDFORD GIRLS TENNIS

After dropping its first two matches against Great Northern Conference contenders Lakeland and Stevens Point Pacelli, things have swung the other way for Medford’s girls tennis team with six wins in seven matches in a six-day span.

The latest win in that run came Tuesday when Medford swept away Antigo 7-0 on the MASH courts to improve to 2-2 in league play.

Lineup adjustments made over the weekend in Altoona continued to pay off in Tuesday’s dual as the Raiders won all seven matches in straight sets. The seven wins upped Medford’s GNC point total to 34, which in that sense, puts the Raiders atop the league standings, though the Raiders have also played more duals than anyone else in the conference so far.

One of the key changes to the lineup has senior Grace Holmes moving from numbertwo singles to number-one doubles with senior Indya Mann. They improved to 3-2 together Tuesday with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Antigo’s Anna Vandeweerd and Evie Trabant-McKenna.

Seniors Hannah Dahl and Sydnie Peterson filled the number-two doubles spot Tuesday and got a hard-fought 6-4, 7-5 win over Matty Ratliff and Faith Cassetta. Dahl and Peterson had a big finish, rallying from a 5-2 deficit in the second set.

In flight three, Lily Holmes and Rachel Daniels controlled their match with Evie Lucht and Maggie Neufeld 6-2, 6-2.

Audrey Ruesch improved to 5-3 for the year at number-one singles with a 6-0, 6-0 clean sweep of Antigo’s Hailey Burhop. Bumping up now to the two-spot, Natalie Preuss moved to 4-1 there and 6-3 overall with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Antigo’s Elyse Packard.

At number-three, Raider junior Makenna Tlusty remained unbeaten with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Lily Baumgartner. Tlusty is 5-0 in flightthree matches and 3-0 in flight-four matches.

According to head coach Jake Bucki, senior Emily Kiselicka was a key piece in the changes as she emerged as a reliable numberfour singles player over the weekend. She moved to 4-1 in that spot Tuesday with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Addison Burhop.

Now 6-3 overall, the Raiders have an intriguing GNC matchup today, Thursday, at Rhinelander. The Hodags are 1-1 in league play and are an annual title contender, but Bucki feels his team can certainly give them a run.

From there, Medford has a week off until hosting Newman Catholic Sept. 12.
