LOYAL QUAD
The Rib Lake volleyball team started its 2024 season by winning two of three matches Tuesday at the Loyal Quad.
The Redmen won a competitive 2-0 match with Whitehall, dominated Greenwood in a 2-0 sweep and then came up a little short in each game of a 2-0 loss to the host Greyhounds.
Against Whitehall, Rib Lake took the lead early in game one and held it throughout in a 25-21 win. In game two, the Norse led 18-13 when the Redmen went on a 6-0 run to reverse momentum. Tessa Weik served three aces in the run and Coralee Glenzer had a kill.
Down 21-20, Weik’s forced an error with a hard push. Camryn Glenzer had a nice block to keep a point alive, leading to a Whitehall error and a 22-21 lead. Coralee Glenzer served an ace and Madilyn Blomberg had a kill as Rib Lake closed out the match 25-22.
Weik and Blomberg were credited with six kills apiece in that match, while Coralee Glenzer had four. Weik had eight assists and Addison Gumz had six. The Redmen served 11 aces. Weik had three, while Gumz, Blomberg and Coralee Glenzer had two each. Tahlia Scheithauer had 10 digs.
Rib Lake won both games against Greenwood by scores of 25-9. Game one was never close, but game two was at 13-9 when the Redmen went on a 12-0 tear to end it. Gumz had two aces in the run plus her bump kill made it 24-9. Diving saves by Gumz and Scheithauer led to the 22nd point.
Weik had four kills, three aces and three assists. Gumz had four aces and five assists. Camryn Glenzer had two aces and two kills and Scheithauer had four digs while Blomberg added three.
The Loyal match turned late in the first set. Freshman middle Megan Komarek gave Rib Lake an early spark with a block and two kills, Gumz got an attack to roll over the net and fall for a point and Weik had a kill in Rib Lake’s 10-4 opening run. Blomberg killed a free ball for a 16-11 lead and the lead got back to 18-12 when Loyal dug in, pulling within 20-19 and 21-20. Coralee Glenzer got a kill but Loyal finished on a 5-0 run, including two kills from Addysen Wolf to win it 25-22.
Loyal took an early 8-4 lead in game two and held on from there. Rib Lake got within 10-8 when Avery Niemi found a hole in the middle of Loyal’s defense and got within three a couple of times on Weik kills. Weik’s tip kill made it 22-19, but Loyal got winning attacks from Olivia Nikolai and Wolf to close it out at 25-19.
Weik had six kills, while Coralee Glenzer and Komarek had four each. Camryn Glenzer added three. Weik had eight assists, Gumz had five and Blomberg had two. Weik had Rib Lake’s only ace. Scheithauer and Coralee Glenzer had 10 digs apiece, while Weik and Blomberg had eight each against a team that is expected to do well this season in the Eastern Cloverbelt Conference.
Rib Lake makes its annual trip to the Marathon Invitational Saturday with the first matches set for 9 a.m. The Redmen will compete in quads at Owen-Withee and Auburndale next Tuesday and Thursday.
