DAIRYLAND LEAGUE SMALL

Down 7-0 through six innings, the Westboro Trojans gave themselves a chance for a comeback win Friday night with a four-run seventh-inning rally and they completed the comeback with a fourrun ninth that stunned host Abbotsford 87 in Dairyland League play.

Patience at the plate drove the ninthinning rally as the Trojans drew three walks, plus three batters got hit by pitches, including Marshall Westfall, who got plunked with two outs to drive in the goahead run.

Braxton Weissmiller started the inning by drawing a walk, Connor Westfall got hit and Butch Wiegel walked to load the bases. Tucker Kraemer got hit by a pitch to drive in the first run. James Holliday hit into a fielder’s choice to drive in the second, plus the Merchants failed to get an out on the play. Javon Penny sacrificed the tying run in and Jesus Ontiveros walked to re-load the bases.

Abbotsford got a big strikeout of Tanner Hraby for the second out of the inning, but then Westfall got hit to give Westboro the lead. Ontiveros, who threw all nine innings worked around a walk and an error to preserve the win in the bottom of the ninth.

Westboro’s seventh-inning rally also was fueled by walks as three of them loaded the bases with one out. Marshall Westfall singled in the first run, then Weissmiller –– one of several players in the game who already had one game for the day under their belts with Medford’s Post 147 Senior Legion team –– doubled in two. Wiegel’s fielder’s choice made it 74.

Abbotsford built its lead with two unearned runs in the third, four runs in the fifth and another in the sixth. The fifth-inning uprising included an RBI double by Payton Schreiber, who added a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Ontiveros allowed just five hits. He struck out eight, walked eight and hit a batter. Only two of Abbotsford’s runs were earned.

Marshall Westfall and Holliday both went two for five at the plate for Westboro. Schreiber had two hits and four RBIs for Abbotsford.

The Trojans improved to 4-1 in the Dairyland League’s Small Division and took over sole possession of second place behind 6-0 Rib Lake. Westboro is at Pittsville this Sunday for a 1:30 p.m. first pitch before hosting Interwald on July 28.

Abbbotsford, now 3-2, is at Spirit Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
