DAIRYLAND LEAGUE SMALL - Pittsville knocks out Ticks, 14-4
DAIRYLAND LEAGUE SMALL
The Interwald Woodticks got off to a rough start and, with the exception of one inning, things never got much better for them in a 14-4 seven-inning loss at Pittsville Sunday in Small Division play within the Dairyland League.
The result left both teams at 3-2 in the division standings with two games to play. With Rib Lake now at 6-0, both teams are out of title contention.
Pittsville jumped all over Interwald starter Peter Devine, scoring five runs in the first inning and three more in the second for an early 8-0 lead. A three-run sixth gave Interwald some hope, creating a 9-4 score, but the River Bandits put up a five-spot in the seventh to end the game early via the 10-run rule.
Pittsville had five hits in the first inning, including an RBI double from Ryan Schwanebeck, a two-run double by Evan Haley, another RBI double from Grant Rademan and a sacrifice fly from Justin Rayburn.
Dawson Luther singled in a run, Haley doubled in another and Grant Rademan added a sacrifice fly in the second. Devine lasted just 1.1 innings while taking the loss. Jackson Blomberg took over and cooled off the River Bandits until the seventh. The Woodticks got on the board in the fifth on Carter Scheithauer’s RBI single. After Pittsville’s Ben Friday answered with an RBI single of his own, Interwald had its big inning against Pittsville reliever Sam Schwanebeck. Sam Gumz singled and stole second. With two outs, Logan Blomberg walked. Both runners scored on Matt Mohr’s double to the leftfield corner and Craig Scheithauer pulled another double to right to score Mohr.
Interwald stranded two runners in the top of the seventh, then Pittsville busted out again in the bottom half with Haley’s two-run single and a clinching base hit by Rademan being the key hits.
Haley was three for four with five RBIs for the River Bandits. Rademan drove in three runs and was three for five.
Gumz and Craig Scheithauer each had two of Interwald’s eight hits. Jackson Blomberg pitched five innings, striking out one, walking six, hitting one and allowing seven hits.
Logan Zickert started for Pittsville and went three shutout innings, striking out four on two hits. Dawson Luther allowed a run on two hits in two innings before Schwanebeck finished up.
Interwald hosts Tomahawk Sunday to make up a rainout from earlier in the summer. First pitch is at 1:30 p.m. Pittsville hosts Westboro at the same time.
