POST 147 LEGION BASEBALL

Medford’s Post 147 Senior Legion baseball team got a bit of a late scare, but it made sure a 12-0 lead didn’t completely vanish in a 12-7 win over the Rhinelander Post 7 Rebels Tuesday in a game played at Whittlesey.

Post 147 got four scoreless innings from starting pitcher JV Castillo, three hits from Max Dietzman and five final outs on the mound from Parker Lissner in a rare pitching appearance for him to go to 2-1 for the summer.

Rhinelander made things interesting by scoring six runs in the fifth to cut Medford’s lead in half and then adding one more in the sixth, but that was as close as the Rebels got as Post 147 ended a last-ditch seventh-inning threat by Rhinelander with a game-ending double play on a ground ball hit by John Turek.

Medford did all of its damage in the second, third and fourth innings.

The first four runs were scored in the bottom of the second inning with most of the damage happening with two outs. Max Dietzman singled with one out and Seth Borchardt drew a two-out walk. Both scored on JV Castillo’s double to the leftfield corner. He scored on Lissner’s hit. A Braxton Weissmiller single and an error on a ball hit by Payton Schreiber loaded the bases for Carson Carbaugh, who singled in another run, but Weissmiller was nabbed at the plate for the third out while also trying to score.

The big rally came in the third with Post 147 scoring six times. Dietzman’s double was sandwiched by walks to Michael Borchardt and Seth Borchardt to load the bases with one out. Oscar Hanson relieved Rhinelander starter Dylan Vanderbunt and threw a runscoring wild pitch. Lissner’s sacrifice fly made it 6-0. Two runs scored on walks to Weissmiller and Schreiber and two more scored on wild pitches.

Weissmiller’s two-run single scored Seth Borchardt, who had been hit by a pitch, and Castillo, who had walked, in the fourth.

Rhinelander’s six-run fifth inning rally was accomplished with two outs. Carbaugh relieved Castillo and got a strikeout and a flyout. Vanderbunt walked, Turek singled and an error on a ball hit by Sam Schneider loaded the bases and extended the inning, and the Rebels took advantage.

Kaden Vanney ripped a three-run double and Tyler Chariton cleared the leftfield fence for a two-run homer. Connor Augustine walked and scored on Hanson’s double before Post 147 finally got out of the inning. Vanney’s RBI single made it 12-7 in the sixth.

Dietzman went three for four for Post 147, Weissmiller was two for two with two RBIs and Castillo, Lissner, Carbaugh and Jack Wojcik had a hit apiece. Castillo struck out five and walked three. Lissner struck out two, walked one and allowed two hits.

Vanney led the Rebels by going three for four with a double, two singles and four RBIs.

Medford was scheduled to host Marshfield on Wednesday. Post 147 will go to Marshfield Monday for a doubleheader rescheduled from Friday’s rainout. Medford is at Chippewa Falls for a 5:30 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday.
