Marathon’s varsity golf team on Thursday won a WIAA Division 3 regional golf championship for the first time in school history. The Red Raiders golfed a teamlow 343 on Pine Valley’s Par 71 golf course.
Red Raiders senior Alex Pawlowicz and junior Blake Kraft each shot an 84 to tie for third place with another golfer at the regional. Senior Jacob Rayner shot an 87 to earn seventh place while junior Myles Handrick shot an 88 to tie for eighth place. Senior Dylan Dodson shot a 97 for 20th place.
Marathon head golf coach Luke Jacobson said, “Winning the regional was certainly a team goal for us at the start of the season. I think being so close in conference by taking second place really fueled us to be competitive for the playoff run. The golfers knew we had never won the regional, so it was important to them to be the first team to do it.”
“You would think Pine Valley would be an advantage for us through the years. Golfers from Marathon who have played in a home regional or sectional know that is far from the truth. Even though we have a lot of knowledge and experience on the course, we also have a lot of scar tissue on some of the holes. The expectations get a little higher, and we have historically had a hard time playing free and confident. This year our experience paid off and we had a great round from our team.”
Marathon’s golf season ended at Tuesday’s WIAA Division 3 sectional hosted by Wabeno at the Par 70 McCauslin Brook Golf Course in Lakewood. The top two sectional teams, Bonduel and Lena, advance to the state tournament on June 3-4 at Blackwolf Run-Meadow Golf Course in Kohler. Marathon’s golf team shot 348 to take third place. Bonduel was the sectional team champion with 313 followed by Lena with 317.
Dodson shot an 80 at the sectional to tie for 11th place. Pawlowicz shot an 81 to tie for 14th place. Kraft shot 92 for 39th place while Jacobson shot 95 for 44th place and Handrick shot 100 for 55th place.
