Edgar baseball is victorious in Eau Claire

Edgar freshman slugger Sawyer Weiland belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning of Thursday’s WIAA Division 4 home regional quarterfinal. Junior Jase Apfelbeck, meanwhile, was dealing on the mound against Gilman. Apfelbeck struck out 12 Gilman batters while only surrendering three walks and no runs in Edgar’s 11-0 win in five innings.
Apfelbeck smacked a triple and senior first baseman Marcus Huehnerfuss doubled in the victory. Sophomore catcher Lucas Stahnke batted two for two with three RBIs and a run scored. Junior shortstop Leyton Schuett, sophomore second baseman Gavin Mauer, Apfelbeck and Huehnerfuss scored two runs each.
No. 6 playoff seed Edgar also beat No. 3 seed Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran, 6-1, in Tuesday night’s regional semifinal at Carson Park in Eau Claire.
Schuett earned the complete-game pitching win. He struck out five batters while giving up eight hits, three walks and one run. Huehnerfuss batted two for three with an RBI and two runs scored. Junior rightfielder Dakota Ellenbecker hit two for four with an RBI and a run scored. Junior centerfielder Brock Mauer led the Wildcats with two RBIs.
Edgar has a 12-8 record this season going into the regional championship today at No. 2 seed Flambeau. The winner between Edgar and Flambeau will advance to play in the sectional at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4, at Village Park in Bruce. The sectional championship is at 4 p.m. on June 4.

Raiders take regional quarterfinal
Marathon’s varsity baseball squad easily defeated Menominee Indian, 16-0, in Thursday’s WIAA Division 3 home regional quarterfinal. After a scoreless first inning, things unraveled for Menominee Indian when it gave up 12 runs to Marathon in the second inning.
Senior Tyler Underwood struck out 13 batters while earning the pitching win. Senior first baseman Grant Warren batted two for four with a double. Sophomore Cale Quaintance hit two for four with a double. Sophomore second baseman Blake Underwood doubled. His first cousin, Tyler Underwood, doubled and collected two RBIs. Senior right fielder Derek Vesely led Marathon with three RBIs while junior left fielder Cody Radtke and sophomore catcher True Thurs had two RBIs each.
Marathon has a 21-3 record this season. No. 3 seed Marathon plays at home today against No. 6 Auburndale in a regional semifinal. The winner will play in the regional championship at No. 2 seed Stratford.
Tigers tame Cards
Stratford’s varsity baseball team upended No. 7 playoff seed Crandon, 7-1, during Tuesday’s home WIAA Division 3 regional semifinal. The Tigers got off to a quick start by scoring four runs in the first inning against the Cardinals. Sophomore left handed hitting catcher Brady Berg had an RBI single while junior infielder Vance Kielman smacked a three-run homer.
Senior Henry Zaleski earned the complete- game pitching win. He only surrendered four hits and one run while striking out three batters and walking one in the victory.
Stratford has a 21-3 record and will play in a home regional championship against the winner between No. 3 seed Marathon versus No. 6 seed Auburndale.
