Stratford senior baseball player Landon Zawislan nearly hit for the cycle in Monday’s 10-0 win in five innings against Mosinee at Athletic Park in Wausau.

Zawislan hit a two-run home run to left field in the third inning, a two-RBI double in the fourth inning and an RBI single in the second inning. He had five total RBIs in the win.

Senior Brady Schmidt continued his stellar pitching season on Monday. He struck out nine batters while only surrendering three hits and three runs in the victory.

Stratford has a 17-5 overall record this season while Mosinee is 20-4. Stratford was awarded a No. 2 seed in the WIAA Division 3 playoffs. The Tigers have a first round bye in the regional quarterfinals this Thursday, May 23. Stratford begins postseason play Tuesday, May 28, with a regional semifinal against the winner of this Thursday’s No. 7 seed Crandon versus No. 10 seed Spencer regional quarterfinal. Stratford will likely play in a home regional championship on Wednesday, May 29, against either Auburndale or Marathon.

Red Raiders keep winning

Marathon’s varsity baseball team beat Fond du Lac St. Mary Springs, 7-5, on Thursday at Marian University in Fond du Lac. Senior Tyler Underwood earned the pitching win. Senior Grant Warren batted two for two at the plate. Marathon then defeated Pittsville, 9-3, on the road Monday. Junior Cody Radtke was the winning pitcher. Sophomores True Thurs and Cale Quaintance collected two RBIs each.

Wildcats pick up huge win

Edgar’s varsity baseball team beat a solid Marshfield Columbus squad, 5-2, on Monday at home. Junior Leyton Schuett earned the pitching win in relief of junior starter Jase Apfelbeck who surrendered the Dons’ only two runs in 4.2 innings of work. Apfelbeck did strike out six batters while only surrendering four hits and one walk. Schuett fanned two batters while only giving up four hits and no walks in 2.1 innings.

Junior catcher Lucas Stahnke led the Wildcats with two RBIs in the victory. Edgar has a 10-8 overall record this season while Columbus is 15-3.

Edgar received a No. 6 seed in the WIAA Division 4 playoffs and plays at home this Thursday, May 23, against No. 11 Gilman. The winner of Thursday’s regional quarterfinal will play in a road regional semifinal on Tuesday against No. 3 seed Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran which has a bye in the regional quarterfinals.

Bluejays receive favorable seed

The Athens varsity baseball squad was awarded a No. 4 seed in the WIAA Division 4 playoffs and a bye in this Thursday’s regional quarterfinals. Athens will play a regional semifinal home game this Tuesday, May 28, against the winner of Thursday’s quarterfinal between No. 5 Prairie Farm and No. 12 New Auburn. Should Athens win on Tuesday, then it would likely play a road regional championship against No. 1 seed Rib Lake on Wednesday, May 29.
