Stratford head track and field coach Nate Heeg said it was a “historical night” for the Tigers at Monday’s Marawood Conference meet in Abbotsford. It was the first time in school history that both the Stratford boys and girls track and field teams won the conference championship in the same season.
“Winning both the boys and girls conference championships was an amazing accomplishment that we have been working toward all year,” he said. “Both sides believed it was possible. To win conference it takes a team effort with multiple people contributing and sometimes going outside their comfort zone to try to achieve a few extra points. I can say that both the boys and girls approached this meet selflessly and were ready to do what it took to get the points needed to be in the hunt for the championship.”
Stratford’s boys track and field squad dominated its Marawood competition on Monday to win its third straight conference title. Stratford amassed 173 points to easily outdistance runner-up Marathon with 119.5 points. Edgar took third place with 116 points. Athens placed ninth with 23 points.
“On the boys side, they were strong from start to finish, and everyone did their part to make it happen,” Heeg said. “Jett Schoenherr established a new conference meet record in the 200-meter dash with 22.42 seconds. The 4x100-meter relay team of Payton Glenn, Zander Zawislan,

Coltan Breit and Schoenherr set a conference meet record with 43.34 seconds. The boys 4x200-meter relay team of Glenn, Austin O’Neil, Breit and Zawislan also set a conference record with one minute, 32.22 seconds. A number of personal bests were also achieved throughout the night.”
Stratford’s girls track and field team won its first Marawood Conference championship since 2005. Stratford edged runner- up Marathon by only two points, 95 to 93. Abbotsford placed third with 88 points and Edgar was fourth with 68. Athens placed sixth with 59 points.
“On the girls side, we knew it would be a close battle,” Heeg said. “We needed to have a few things fall our way for it to get done, and those things did indeed happen. Multiple scoring places happened from first to eighth places, and everyone contributed in a true team effort. Brianna Sherden tied a school record in the 200-meter dash at 26.11 seconds. She also achieved a conference record in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 7-1/2 inches. A number of personal bests were achieved throughout this meet, along with great performances by individuals and relay teams that finished ahead of where they were projected to finish.”
Streit is conference MVP again
Edgar senior Teegan Streit won the triple jump and the 110 and 300-meter hurdles at the conference meet. He was also a member of Edgar’s winning 4x400-meter relay team on Monday night. Thus, Streit was awarded Marawood Conference MVP for the second consecutive year.
The Wildcats 4x400-meter relay team finished the race in 3:30.45 to break the Marawood Conference record that had stood since 1981. Relay team members besides Teegan Streit are his younger brother Tucker Streit along with Ty Schnelle and Kohlbe Weisenberger.
Weisenberger broke Edgar’s school record in the 400-meter dash with 50.26 seconds. He took second place behind winner Nolyn Lindner of Newman Catholic who finished the race in 49.93 seconds.
Edgar head track and field coach Greg Streit was also proud of how many of his other boys and girls performed at Monday’s conference meet in Abbotsford. Most notably, senior Kyra Anderson won the discus with a throw of 118 feet, two inches. Edgar’s girls 4x200-meter relay team of Brooke Imhoff, Malana Koehler, Addison Trawicki and Rachel Burke won first place in 1:50.29.
“Overall, our kids came out and competed like we knew they would,” Greg Streit said. “It was our boys 4x400-meter relay team’s goal to break the conference record from 1981 and we accomplished what we came out to do. I am extremely happy for and proud of Kohlbe for breaking our school record in the 400. He set this as his goal and it’s always great to see a kid accomplish a goal they set. Having Teegan win the MVP for the second consecutive year is a very special accomplishment. There are so many excellent athletes in our conference right now so winning this award means a lot to him and our program. He is a special kid who grew up as a track and field manager, which makes it extra special. As a team we are looking forward to great things happening in our tournament run.”
Marcell breaks conference record
Marathon sophomore Chris Marcell is having another great season throwing discus after placing eighth at the WIAA Division 3 state championships last season. He took first place in the discus at Monday’s Marawood Conference meet with a throw of 178 feet to break the conference record. Marathon’s Alisha Blender won the girls 100-meter hurdles in 16.70 seconds at the conference meet.
Peel almost sets Marawood mark
Athens senior Ryan Peel achieved a height of 14 feet, six inches to win the boys pole vault championship at Monday’s Marawood Conference meet in Abbotsford. The boys conference pole vault record is 14 feet, nine inches. The Athens boys school record in the pole vault is 15 feet, one inch that was set by Daniel Drewek in 2007.
Telschow breaks school record
Bluejays junior Malaina Telschow won the girls pole vault conference championship with a height of 10 feet, six inches. Her sophomore teammate, Ava Ford, took second place with 10 feet.
Telschow broke the Athens girls school pole vault record last Wednesday by obtaining a height of 10 feet, 10 inches at the Marathon meet. Gabriella Janke held the previous school pole vault record with 10 feet, nine inches. Telschow said it was a relief to finally break the school record knowing that all her hard work finally paid off.
Athens pole vaulting coach Cade Ellenbecker said it was Telschow’s goal from the start of this season to break the school record.
“She’s been knocking on the door of breaking the school record basically all year, and all it took was one nice weather meet for it to happen,” he said. “Not only has she been working her butt off all season, but she also spent the entire offseason preparing and getting ready for moments like this. She’s everything a coach could ask for because she has a great work ethic, is extremely coachable and she has a drive to do her best. With her only being a junior, it’s going to be fun to see how the rest of this season goes for her and then how she carries over this season’s successes into her senior season.”
