The Gilman Pirates gave Alma Center Lincoln a couple extra outs to work with in the top of the sixth inning and the visiting Hornets gladly took advantage, breaking a 4-4 tie with six runs en route to their 11-4 non-conference win.
The Pirates had rallied from an early 4-0 deficit with a four-run third. But that was all the offense the home team would get against Lincoln pitcher Jackson Reddy, who went the distance. Gilman got eight hits off of him. Three of the runs were earned. Reddy struck out eight and walked two.
Seven errors were costly for Gilman, now 3-6 overall, as only three of the Hornetsâ runs were earned.
The Hornets (2-9) took a 2-0 lead with runs on a groundout and a passed ball in the top of the first. Doubles by Luke Fischer and Jack Paul drove in runs in the top of the third.
Gilmanâs tying rally in the bottom half started with an Adam Draeger single to left. Two outs later, Connor Nichols singled and Joey Syryczuk doubled to score Draeger. Dawson Grunsethâs single drove in a pair of runs and Dawson Robinson singled to left with an error allowing the fourth run to score.
Alma Center Lincoln turned a line drive hit by Grunseth into a double play to end Gilmanâs fifth and its momentum carried into the top of the sixth.
With one out, Luke Anderson reached on an error and two walks loaded the bases. Fischerâs short pop fly was not caught and turned into the go-ahead RBI single. A sacrifice fly by Jay Stetzer made it 6-4. Another walk loaded the bases and then two more runs scored on Gilmanâs second error of the inning. Adam Massman hit a two-run single to cap the inning.
A sacrifice fly in the seventh gave Lincoln its last run.
Nichols was two for three to lead Gilman offensively. Grunseth was one for three with two runs batted in. Dalton Wisocky, Syryczuk, Robinson, Tate Krizan and Draeger added a hit apiece.
With three conference games still to come this week, the Pirates spread out their pitching among five different players. Robinson had the most success, pitching 2.2 innings mid-game and recording two strikeouts while allowing an unearned run and three hits. Troy Duellman got the last four outs with two strikeouts, while allowing a hit and an unearned run.
Fischer was a handful at the top of Lincolnâs batting order. He was four for five with three runs scored and two driven in.
Gilmanâs home game with Neillsville-Granton Tuesday was postponed to Monday. The Pirates were scheduled to host Columbus Catholic Wednesday and go to Neillsville-Granton today, Thursday. Gilman hosts Greenwood Friday at 5 p.m. A May 16 home game with Flambeau was canceled. The Pirates will host Prentice on May 17.
Gilman 17, Greenwood 6
The Pirates built a 9-1 lead just an inning and a half in and got their second Eastern Cloverbelt Conference win of the spring Friday with a 17-6 rout at Greenwood.
The Pirates banged out 13 hits and took advantage of eight Indian errors in the sixinning win. Nichols had three of the hits. Wisocky got the win with 4.2 solid innings. He struck out seven and walked five while allowing three hits. None of Greenwoodâs six runs were earned.
Beau Pockat got a strikeout while recording the last four outs. Most of Gilmanâs damage was done in a four-run first inning and five-run second.
Nichols started the first-inning rally with a one-out double. He scored following singles by Joey Syryczuk and Grunseth. Krizanâs single up the middle scored two and he scored on a two-out error on a ball hit by Talyn Podolak.
After Greenwood got an unearned run, the Pirates were back at it in the top of the second. Wisocky hit a leadoff single and his courtesy runner, Tony Syryczuk, stole second base and scored on a base hit by Nichols. Joey Syryczuk reached on an error. Grunsethâs single scored Nichols. A wild pitch scored Duellman, who was running for Joey Syryczuk. Krizan walked, Draeger hit an infield single and, with two down, an error on a ball hit by Lucas Halida scored Krizan and Draeger.
Greenwood got three runs in the third to tighten things up a bit at 9-4. But then the Pirates went back to scoring consistently.
Robinson came through with a two-out, two-run single in the top of the fourth. Run-scoring singles by Pockat and Halida highlighted a four-run fifth that made it 154. Greenwood extended the game by scoring twice in the bottom half, but Gilman wrapped things up with a two-run sixth. Nichols doubled, moved to third on an error on a grounder hit by Joey Syryczuk and then the Indians booted a ball hit by Duellman as Nichols scored. Syryczuk stole home while Duellman got caught in a rundown.
Grunseth went two for three with two RBIs. Halida was two for three.
