Colby track takes second and fourth at Gilman

The Hornets track and field team was in action at Stratford and Gilman over the past week as they work their way into the final weeks of the regular season and prep for the conference meet next Tuesday.
Stratford Invite
The track and field teams also competed at Stratford last Friday afternoon and evening, battling with nine other area schools. The boys team placed sixth overall with 52 points while the girls team took seventh with 35 points. The hosting Tigers took first in both competitions, the boys team ending the night with 194.50 points and the girls taking the top spot with 147.83 points.
Seth Hopperdietzel tied his school record height as he came through with the Hornets sole event victory in Stratford, claiming first in the pole vault. When all was said and done, the senior held a two-foot advantage over Edgar’s Austin Schreiber after clearing a height of 13 feet, six inches.
Xander Buchanan had the boys second-best finish by taking the runner-up spot in the high jump. He trailed only Kaden Foster of Stratford in the event, reaching a height of five feet, eight inches. Teammate Caden Kleparski also scored for Colby in the event, taking fifth with a height of five feet, six inches.
Buchanan, Erik Martinez and Max Adams grabbed three fourth place finishes over the course of the meet. Martinez and Buchanan added more points in the field events for the Hornets as the former claimed the fourth spot in the shot put with a throw of 39 feet, seven-and-three-quarters inches and Buchanan doing so in the triple jump with a leap of 38 feet, six inches. Adams, meanwhile, had his team’s best result on the track, taking fourth in the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:45.38.
Rolyn Hopperdietzel added a pair of scoring performances for the Hornets on Friday. The freshman notched sixth place in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 11 inches and seventh in the triple jump, where his furthest attempt measured 36 feet, three-and-a-half inches.
The girls team took home two second place finishes in Stratford. Pearl Feiten was the runner up in the 400-meter dash, where she posted a time of 1:03.46, putting her behind only Auburndale’s Rose Hasenohrl, who took first with a time of 1:00.69. The Colby 4x800-meter relay team also took second place with a time of 11:07.41.
Casey Reynolds and Makenna Herrmann had a pair of fourths for the Hornets. Reynolds claimed her spot in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:58.11 while Herrmann did so in the 300-meter hurdles, completing the race in 55.73 seconds.
Annamarie Schmitt and Herrmann also picked up points for Colby in the 1600-meter run. Schmitt placed fifth in the event with a time of 6:02.60 and Herrmann took eighth with a time of 6:27.96.
Edynn Hinker had the girls squad’s only scoring result in the field events, taking seventh in the shot put with a throw of 27 feet, nine-and-a-quarter inches while Veronica Mateer added an eighth place finish in the 100-meter hurdles by posting a time of 19.98 seconds.
Gilman Invitational
The Hornets traveled to Gilman last Tuesday to take on athletes from eight other schools. The girls team tied for second place, ending the day with 106 points. Owen-Withee and Gilman both ended with the same total and Ladysmith took first overall with 125 points. The boys squad took fourth with 93 points, trailing Columbus Catholic and Ladysmith which tied for second with 105 points. Owen-Withee claimed the top team spot with 161 points.
The girls team was buoyed by their results in the distance and relay events, where they scored 32 and 26 of their points respectively, as well as two victories in the throwing events.
In the 800-meter and 1600-meter runs, the Hornets had six combined scoring performances. Pearl Feiten and Casey Reynolds notched a pair of second place finishes for Colby. Feiten finished a little over half a second short of the top spot in the 800-meter run, trailing only Owen-Withee’s Madi Mueller with a time of 2:37.65. Meanwhile, Reynolds claimed the runner-up spot in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:51.30. She also had the Hornets’ second best finish in the 800-meter run, posting a time of 2:43.10 in the event to take fourth place.
Annamarie Schmitt picked up a third place finish in the 1600-meter run with a time of 6:12.73 and a sixth place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:54.34, adding nine more points to the Hornets’ total. Ali Adams’ seventh place finish in the 1600-meter run, where she posted a time of 7:08.54, rounded out Colby’s scoring in the distance events.

Alexis Vanderhoof placed high enough that she also would have scored had the Hornets not already had three scorers in the event, taking eighth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:58.15.
Two sprint relay teams finished in second on Tuesday, with the 4x200-meter relay and the 4x400-meter relay squads claiming the runner-up spots for the Hornets. The 4x200-meter team of Feiten, Vanderhoof, Jazmyn Heeg and Tori Underwood completed their race in 2:00.66 to earn their spot while the 4x400-meter Feiten, Reynolds, Schmitt and Adams claimed their second place with a time of 4:49.03.
The 4x800-meter relay of Adams, Vanderhoof, Jenelle Ertl and Makenna Herrmann also picked up six points for Colby by taking third, posting a time of 12:12.97.
Daelyn Rieck cruised to a pair of wins in the field events. She had a 20-foot margin of victory in the discus, where she had a throw of 129 feet, four inches and her throw of 40 feet, four inches in the shot put was threeand- a-half feet further than the next closest thrower. Teammate Edynn Hinker also scored in the shot put, taking fourth with a throw of 28 feet, 10.75 inches.
Veronica Mateer had a trio of top-eight finishes for the Hornets, placing fourth in the triple jump, her furthest attempt measuring 28 feet, five inches and then taking fifth in both the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles events, putting up times of 19.64 seconds and 1:05.63 respectively.

14.58 seconds, a sixth place finish for Feiten in the pole vault with a height of seven feet, and two sevenths, one for Underwood in the 200-meter dash with a time of 30.94 seconds and one for Kaitlyn Weiland in the high jump with a height of four feet, two inches.
The boys squad notched three first place finishes in Gilman. The boys 4x800-meter relay team of Max Adams, Jacob Raatz, Carter Roth and Tucker Hayes started Colby’s day on the track with a victory, defeating Owen-Withee’s relay by nine seconds to claim the top spot. Their final time was 9:46.92.
Erik Martinez and Seth Hopperdietzel picked up a pair of individual wins for the Hornets in the field events. Martinez defeated Owen-Withee’s Sullivan Poehler by nearly two feet in the shot-put, his best throw of the day measuring 41 feet. Hopperdietzel also had a two-foot lead over his opponents, though he did so in the pole vault, topping out at 13 feet.
Martinez also had a second place finish in the discus, posting a throw of 116 feet, 10 inches to end as the runner-up. Teammate Oliver Steen was not far behind, taking third in the event with a distance of 112 feet, nine inches. The 4x400-meter relay of Hayes, Roth, Rolyn Hopperdietzel and Caden Kleparski also earned a second for Colby, completing their race in 3:57.61.
Adams added a third in the 3200-meter run, coming in with a time of 10:38.92. Xander Buchanan’s performance in the high jump, where he cleared a height of five feet, six inches, earned him fourth in the event and Kleparski grabbed another fourth for the Hornets in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.71.
Other top eight-finishes included fifths for Seth and Rolyn Hopperdietzel in the 100-meter dash and the triple jump respectively, another fifth for Tucker Hayes in the 300-meter hurdles, a sixth place finish for Raatz in the 3200-meter run, sevenths for Kleparski in the high jump and Moises Fuentes in the shot put and an eighth for Xander Buchanan in the 200-meter dash.
