WWF KIDS FOLKSTYLE TOURNAMENT
Three of Medford youth wrestling’s nine qualifiers earned placements in the weight and age classes during the Wisconsin Wrestling Federation’s Kids Folkstyle State Championships held Friday and Saturday at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison.
Croix Hartl came the closest to a state championship. He got to the title match in the 165-pound weight class in the 2013-14 age group. There were six wrestlers in the bracket.
Hartl drew a first-round bye into the semifinals, where he pinned Theodore Kalscheur of Oregon in 2:24. That set up the championship match with Monte Graves-Anderson of the Burnett County Wrestling Club, which Graves-Anderson won by pin in 2:50.
Amara Gudmundson earned a fourthplace finish out of five wrestlers in the girls 135-pound weight class in the 2013-14 age group. She went 1-3 in her round-robin bracket. The win came in round one when she defeated Crandon’s Monroe Brockway in overtime 6-4. She lost a tight 4-3 decision to Neenah’s Reina Ristow, fell 6-0 to Horicon’s Eva Firari, the eventual champion, and was pinned in 1:24 by Dodgeland’s Olivia Schrader.
Kaylyn Bratland won the fifth-place match in the age 2015-16 45-pound weight class. She lost a tough match in the first round of the six-wrestler bracket, falling 6-5 to Amery’s Weslyn Beer. A loss by pin in 28 seconds to eventual third-place wrestler Lacie Vee of St. Croix Falls put Bratland in the sixth-place match, where she got her revenge against Beer, taking a 16-6 major decision.
Ashton Noland got a win in the age 200910 175-pound weight class, beating Barley Schell 9-6 in his opening round. Losses by pin to Levi Bentz of Campbellsport (:23) and to Thomas Dieringer of Ozaukee (:47) eliminated Noland.
Wrestling at 50 pounds in the girls 2015-16 age group, Taiylor Kautzer opened with a 16-6 major decision over Nekoosa’s Braylee Wolfe, but a 16-1 loss by technical fall to Mia Edwards of Racine and a 9-5 loss to Lillian Crangle of the Ringers Wrestling Club from Menomonee Falls knocked her out of contention. Branch Walton, who was added to the state field last week in the 2011-12 185-pound bracket, got a 7-1 win over Sparta’s Zakkary Davy in his first match before getting pinned in 50 seconds by Reedsville’s Nolan Wilson and in 26 seconds by Marathon’s Bradly Seefeldt.
Anthony Grant went 0-2 at 84 pounds in the 2013-14 age group, losing by pin to Ronan Perry of Monona Grove-McFarland and to Brock Switlick of Wausau West.
Trevor Kautzer lost his matches by technical fall to Kyan Lentz of Sugar River and by major decision to Benny Block of Prescott. Kautzer wrestled at 85 pounds in the 2011-12 age group.
At 210 pounds in the 2009-10 age group, Ian Stickney lost 7-0 to Dylan Van Fleet of The Lincoln Academy of Beloit and was pinned by Jeriel Galarza of the Victory School of Wrestling from River Falls.
