After seeing success all season, two wrestlers from the Cornell-Lake Holcombe- Gilman team achieved their goal of making the State tournament, heading to Madison, Feb. 22-24, to compete at the Kohl Center.
“Both boys wrestled hard this weekend,” said coach Zach Person. “Their objective was to just take it one match at a time and they did just that.”
Freshman Taydyn Angell (215 pounds) first faced Random Lake’s Michael Upson, winning over him to advance to the quarterfinals. Angell dropped that match with Joe Schroeder, of Cedar Grove-Belgium, then competed in the consolation round with Cadott’s Axel Tegels, taking the win, with a 5-4 decision.
Angell then wrestled Bode Brokopp, Iowa- Grant-Highland, dropping that match for a fourth place finish.
“He did a great job keeping matches close, to be able to take advantage of opportunities that were given to him,” said Person. “He did a great job taking opportunities when his opponents would have a mishap and capitalize from it.”
Also placing for the Wolfpack, was senior Troy Duellman (157 pounds), who finished in fifth, after some tough matches.
“Overall Troy did a great job down at State and he was able to end his career with the Wolfpack with a win,” said Person.
Duellman got started in the first round, going up against Kewaunee’s Mitchell VanGoethem, winning with a 6-1 decision, before facing Clear Lake’s Tyler Sunday, dropping that match in a 1-0 decision. He then competed in the consolation bracket, winning over Caleb Mackey, of Pardeeville, with a 7-0 decision, to join Angell on the podium for the Wolfpack.
“We couldn’t be prouder of them for their accomplishments,” said Person.
