MEDFORD GIRLS WRESTLING

Avery Losiewicz won the 126-pound championship and Bridget Wesle picked up a big win at 132 pounds to put the Medford Raiders in 12th place teamwise in Saturday’s Eau Claire North Husky Girls Wrestling Challenge.

The two Raiders combined to score 70 points in the 26-team tournament, which was won by Forest Lake, Minn. with 297 points. Mora, Minn. (208), Eau Claire North (202), Centennial, Minn. (193.5) and St. Croix Falls (162) filled out the top five, while Tomahawk was sixth with 156 points.

Also from the Great Northern Conference, Lakeland was 11th with 82.5 points and Mosinee was 21st with 29.

Losiewicz (28-3) recorded four pins to claim the 126-pound title. The freshman pinned Forest Lake’s Breana Steven in 1:00 and Elizabeth Snyder of Rosemount, Minn. in 16 seconds in preliminary action to advance to the championship semifinals. There, Losiewicz pinned Forest Lake’s Anna Ruka, who is 19-10, in just 39 seconds. In the championship final, Losiewicz pinned 32-5 Nora Houglum of Mora in 3:30.

Wesle had two good matches in the preliminary rounds, going the distance in a 7-2 loss to Mosinee’s Blaynne Crawford and then pulling off an upset by pinning Tomahawk’s Halle Derleth, who is 18-10, in 3:27.

That win sent Wesle (4-17) to the fifththrough eighth-place pool, where she lost an 8-4 decision to Lakeland’s Moriah Louis and an 8-6 decision to Mora’s Ava Showers.

Girls WIAA individual post-season competition starts at the sectional level. Medford is at the Tomahawk sectional on Feb. 17. Sectional champions in each weight class advance to state. There is just one girls division statewide.
