NASP ARCHERY

The new National Archery in the School Program (NASP) season got underway for the Medford and Gilman Pirate Archery clubs this past weekend with some archers competing in the Badger State Winter Games hosted by Wausau West, some competing at the Lake Holcombe Club Shootouts and some competing in both.

Badger State

At the Badger State shoot, Medford’s high school team placed third out of 10 teams with 3,194 points, just ahead of Gilman’s squad, who scored 3,096 points. Stratford won the team title with 3,323 points, while Cadott (3,293) was second.

Medford’s Ezra Hillebrand, a sophomore, was the second-ranked high school boy out of 84 with a score of 291 out of a possible 300. Marshfield’s Dylann Brogan was the only one better at 297. Raider junior Mattie Gebert was the second-ranked high school girl out of 104 with a score of 286, while senior Jenna Wickersheim was third with her score of 284.

In middle school competition, Medford’s Dylan Emmerich was third out of 122 middle school boys (grades 6-8) with his score of 281 and Gilman’s Reece Weir was the top-scoring local girl, placing ninth out of 100 archers with a 273. Emmerich was six points behind boys champion Tyler Lange of Stratford.

Lake Holcombe

Hillebrand shot another 291 in the bullseye shoot at Lake Holcombe, but in this smaller tournament featuring local teams, that was enough to win the overall and boys high school individual championships. Hillebrand was six points ahead of boys runner-up Hunter Kodl of Thorp, while Gilman’s Wyatt Webster was third at 280. Medford’s Ashton Behling (273) and Gilman’s Tyrel Mravik (269) were fifth and sixth.

Gilman’s Colton Lang came up one point short in the boys middle school division with his 279. He was right behind Thorp’s Henry Nowobielski. Gilman’s Kaysen Westaby was third in the elementary boys division (grades 4-5) and Medford’s Wyllow Freudenthal was fourth among girls.

Gilman outscored Lake Holcombe 3,133-2,766 to win the high school team competition.

Several locals topped the standings in the 3-D shoot, where Gilman placed second in the team middle school standings with 1,319 points, right between Augusta (1,446) and Cornell (1,119) and third in the high school division with 1,529 points behind Augusta (1,573) and Cornell (1,549).

Behling was third overall and first among high school boys with his 283, three points ahead of Hillebrand. Gilman’s Shyan Pentimone was the girls middle school champion with a 274, while Pirate Wyatt Stephens won the boys middle school division with a 268, two points ahead of Lang.
