MEDFORD WRESTLING - Medford powers past Mosinee to stay atop GNC standings
MEDFORD WRESTLING
The Mosinee Indians hit Medford with two pins to start Thursday’s Great Northern Conference wrestling dual meet, but the Raiders got to the strength of their lineup after that and rolled to a 5721 victory.
Medford collected six pins plus three forfeits to pile up the majority of its team points. Senior Braxton Weissmiller added a close 1-0 decision over Bruce Hintz at 215 pounds.
The win put Medford at 3-0 in the GNC with two dual meets left. Those will be held at a double-dual in Antigo tonight, Thursday, starting at 6:30 p.m. The Raiders will face Lakeland (2-1) and Antigo (0-3) in tonight’s meet, which includes Mosinee.
Jackson Nechuta, last year’s GNC champion at 113 pounds, outlasted Raider Jordan Lavin in the meet’s opening match at 120 pounds, pinning him in 5:13. George Ahles, last year’s GNC runner-up at 120, pinned Broden Schilling in 2:48 at 126 pounds to give the Indians an early 12-0 lead.
But then Medford started to get to its strongest wrestlers and they took care of business.
Jude Stark made quick work of Andrew Beatty in the 132-pound match with a 51-second pin. Owen Higgins tied the team score by pinning Christopher Strejc in 3:40 at 138 pounds.
Noah Nechuta gave Mosinee its last lead at 18-12 by taking a forfeit at 144 pounds. Cory Lindahl pinned Landyn Timm in 1:33 at 150 pounds, Gage Losiewicz took a forfeit at 157 pounds and Paxton Rothmeier needed just 23 seconds to pin Calvin Meek in the 165-pound bout.
Evan Wilkins took a forfeit at 175, Logan Kawa pinned Andrew Nevienski in 1:25 at 190 pounds, Weissmiller got his win and Max Dietzman took a forfeit to suddenly put Medford in front 51-18.
Cohen Iczkowski got Mosinee’s last win of the dual, earning an 8-2 decision over Medford’s Caden Olson in a 106-pound battle between freshmen. Raider Nick Malchow closed things out by pinning Mason Fleming in just 44 seconds.
Saturday’s Freedom Invitational was canceled Saturday due to the snowstorm that buried that part of the state. Medford will make its annual trip to the Arcadia Challenge this Saturday. Wrestling is set to start at 9:30 a.m. Medford hosts Elcho in a non-conference dual meet on Jan. 25.
