The Cornell girls basketball team picked up a big win in the first game of the week, taking down a conference foe.

Jan. 9 vs. Birchwood conference (W 58-50)

On the road at Birchwood, the Chiefs realized early on, it was going to be a battle for the victory.

“Birchwood gave us a run for money in the first half,” said coach Stacy Schroeder. “A couple of their players were really hitting their shots.”

Despite the close score at the break, Cornell refused to go home without a win and held on to take the match from the Bobcats, 58-50.

“We made some adjustments at the half and were able to pull ahead in the second,” said Schroeder.

Senior Lauren Samardzich finished the night with 16 points, 3 blocks and 5 rebounds, while junior Bralee Schroeder also had 16 points, as well as 9 rebounds and 7 steals. Freshman Haylee Ellis came next, with 9 points and 8 rebounds, while senior Grace Harycki had 8 points.

Junior Alyssa Bowe ended with 6 points, followed by senior Teryn Close, with 3 points and 3 steals.

Jan. 15 vs. Greenwood non-conference (L 47-30)

Next up, was Greenwood, who came to call on the Chiefs, after a weekend off. Cornell faced some offensive challenges in the first half, down by seven points at halftime. Those woes continued in the second half and the Indians went home with a 47-30 victory.

Samardzich led for Cornell, with 14 points and 10 blocks, followed by B. Schroeder, who notched 8 points and 5 rebounds. Bowe added 5 points to the mix, while Ellis added 3 points and nabbed 8 rebounds.

The Chiefs are now 3-9 on the season and are 2-4 in the league.
