Chiefs pick up first win over the Indians
By Ginna Young
A snowstorm prevented Cornell’s boys basketball program from playing the week’s full schedule of games, but the rest may have done them good, as they picked up their first victory of the year.
Jan. 9 vs. Birchwood conference (L 70-63)
It’s always hard to face Birchwood, with their squad of tall athletes, but especially so on the road, which is what the Chiefs did to kick off the week.
Scoring was all on Birchwood’s side in the first half, as the Bobcats took a 20-point lead into the break. The Chiefs would shake off their woes in the second part of the game, nearly matching Birchwood on the scoreboard.
However, with the first-half deficit, Cornell couldn’t come back in time and the game went to the Bobcats, 6542.
Junior Hunter Anders led for the Chiefs, with 13 points, followed by sophomore Carson Stipek, who recorded 8. Seniors Jayden Joas-Shaw and Bentley Spangler, and junior Torren Parker each added 5 points to the mix, while freshman Edward Woodford chipped in with 3.
Sophomore Grady Abbott and freshman Bryce DeJongh rounded out the scoring, with 2 points each.
Jan. 15 vs. Greenwood non-conference (W 48-33)
After a weekend’s rest, Cornell saw Greenwood come to town, in a non-conference match-up. It was slow going for both sides in the first half, but the Chiefs held onto a slim, two-point lead at halftime.
The second half was a different story, as Cornell got a firm upperhand over the Indians, cruising to a 48-33 win, their first of the year.
Parker came up with a big night for the Chiefs, scoring 18 points, while Stipek had 12. Anders was next, with 7, and DeJongh was right behind, with 6 points. Spangler followed that with 3 points and Shaw added 2.
Cornell is now 1-11 on the season and 0-6 in league action.
