Cadott falls to Crickets, rebounds over Buffaloes

By Ginna Young

The week didn’t start out well offensively for the Cadott girls basketball squad, but after a weekend of rest, they were back to playing the type of ball Hornets fans expect.

Jan. 9 vs. Fall Creek conference (L 65-18)

It was off to Fall Creek for the first game of the week, but offensive woes plagued the Hornets, along with a lapse in defense. The Crickets proved too much for Cadott that night, and the game went to the home team, 65-18.

“We are still working to get tougher, against some of these toughest games on our schedule,” said coach Dave Hazuga.

Junior Kennedy Nerdrum led for Cadott, with 10 points, followed by senior Emma Kowalczyk, with 4. Junior Tarynn Donahue was right behind, with 3 points, and sophomore Danielle Sikora shot a free throw to round out the scoring.

“The girls are competing and keeping the focus, which is improving,” said Hazuga.

Jan. 15 vs. Mondovi non-conference (W 56-46)

Next up, the Hornets stepped out of the conference, facing Mondovi, where the first half leaned in Cadott’s favor. The Hornets took a 20-point lead into the break at home.

“We got off to a hot start and jumped out early,” said Hazuga. “Second half was a little tougher, but the girls closed it out.”

Despite being outscored in the second part of the game, the Hornets held on for a 56-46 victory. The win gives Cadott an 8-7 record, sitting at 1-6 in the league.

“Mondovi is a strong team we played last night, they’re having a good year, and our girls played very well,” said Hazuga. “This was a very good win for us.”

Kowalczyk and senior Bradee Burish each came up with 12 points for the Hornets, while sophomore Taylor Hager ended with 9, followed closely by Donahue, with 8. Nerdrum finished the night with 6 points and Sikora connected on a free throw, for 1 point.
