Raiders set to compete in this weekend’s Tietge Bonspiel
The draws have been announced for the 2023-24 Tietge Bonspiel, Wisconsin’s largest and oldest high school bonspiel, which is set for this weekend at the Wausau Curling Club.
This year marks the 71st Tietge Bonspiel. The Medford Raiders will take part in boys and girls competition, which will take place in 22-team brackets for both sides.
Medford’s girls team of Caidyn Zenner, Erica Brandner, Stacey Dassow and Kaya Fortin comes in with a 3-4 varsity record and will start the bonspiel with an 8 a.m. match Friday against Pardeeville I. The Raiders’ second match will take place at 4:30 p.m. They will face either Waupaca or Marshfield II and their third match is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday with possible opponents being Wausau West I, D.C. Everest IV, Marshfield I, Pardeeville II, Stevens Point and D.C. Everest II.
The boys team of Alex Wilson, Nathan Willman, Austin Klinger and Jaeden Brandner comes in at 2-5 in varsity play. The Raiders drew Poynette II as an opening opponent, also at 8 a.m. Friday. A 1 p.m. match will follow against either Stevens Point I or Pardeeville III. The boys will be back on the ice at 8 a.m. Saturday with potential opponents being Appleton East, Stevens Point III, Waupaca I and Portage II.
Championship and consolation brackets run through the day on Saturday, culminating in first event championship games for both boys and girls at 6:45 p.m. and second event and fourth event finals at 5:30 p.m. Third event finals are expected to start at 7 p.m.
Poynette won last year’s boys championship, while Medford won the second event. Wausau West won the 2023 girls championship.
