Three-pointers propel Loyal boys ahead of Rosholt

With 30 of their points earned through 3-pointers, the Greyhound boys overcame Rosholt in competition Dec. 28. Ten shots were made from outside the paint from four Loyal players during the game, and with an 80 percent record at the free throw line, the Greyhounds ended the game with double the score Rosholt had.
The home game started off with the teams vying for dominance. Cain Toufar scored Loyal’s first points, and Rosholt responded with a basket of its own and a 1-for-2 shot by Dylan DeLaet to put the Hornets up by 1. Isaac Jakobi gave Loyal the lead back going 2-for-2 at the free throw line. Rosholt scored again, and Jacob Schill responded with his first 3-pointer of the night.
Rosholt scored again to tie the game at 7, and that was the last time Rosholt’s score was close to Loyal’s. The Greyhounds quickly went on a short 5-point scoring streak in the game’s next two minutes before the Hornets managed to get the ball through the net again. Loyal then proceeded to outscore Rosholt 15 to 1 in the next six minutes of the game. Loyal’s growing lead was assisted mainly through two free throw shots by Toufar at the 7:59 mark and 3-pointers by Bryce Deegan, who scored two, and Reed Stieglitz, who added another.
Rosholt scored their own, lone 3-pointer in response, but Loyal was on a hot streak, with Schill firing off two more 3-pointers and Jakobi going 1-for-2 at the line just before the close of the first half with a 34-19 score.
Returning in the second half, Loyal wasted no time, scoring a pair of shots from Deegan and Stieglitz before the ball made it into the hands of Schill once again for another 3-pointer. Stieglitz and Deegan added another two 3-pointers to the team’s score to lead 49-25 with 10:45 left in the game. In the next five minutes, Rosholt managed to get to the net, but the Greyhounds responded to each score, bumping the numbers up to 55-29. With five minutes left, scoring by both teams slowed down significantly. Deegan earned 2 more points for Loyal. The game’s final points came from Hudson Hanson, who went 2-for-2 at the 2:28 mark, and Colten Sandelier, who sank the team’s last 3-pointer of the night to end the game with a 62-30 score. The Greyhounds scored 8 out of a possible 10 points at the free throw line. Leading the team in scoring were Deegan and Schill, who both scored 14 points. Deegan made three 3-pointers and was 1-for-2 at the free throw line, while Schill scored four 3-pointers. Other top scorers for Loyal were Toufar, who scored 10 points and Jakobi, who added seven.
Rosholt had a 36-percent completion rate at the free throw line, going 3-for-8 as a team. Top scorers for the Hornets were Marcus Kohl, who scored 14 points, including the team’s only 3-pointer; Tyler Hintz, who scored 9 points, and DeLaet, who added 5.
